A dropped to the floor at L's feet, the faint sniffles he'd been containing bursting into deep, hitching sobs.

"I didn't know!" he wailed. "I, I, I didn't, I liked him, I didn't know!"

"And Near, Mello, and I were responsible for causing Light's death, dearest. To him, Light is very important, as I am to you." He knew A didn't like this conversation, but he hadn't enjoyed his conversations with Kurama or Turlough, either.

"But Light was wrong," he muttered sullenly, stubborn, but unwilling to keep contradicting his idol. "Mikami should know better."

L sighed. "Mikami hasn't seen that Light is wrong." As much as this would hurt both of them, he had to say it. "Mikami is a lot like you, dearest. To him, Light is like me in your eyes. Think about what it would take for you to believe I am wrong." He tried to brace himself for the anticipated outburst.

As outbursts go, it was fairly disappointing. A stared up at L, and silent tears rose in his eyes and streamed down his cheeks. He slumped across L's lap, shaking with unvoiced sobs. Mikami had seemed so nice, but oh, oh, he was so wrong!

L gathered A as close as he could, rocking him. He didn't know what else to say. "I love you, dearest," he whispered. "I'm sorry."

"Not right," he whispered thickly. "Not right, what he did."

L caressed A's hair again. "Please, A, if not now, later, when you're calm again, think about what I said." He thought a moment. "When you're ready, we'll go see the cats and they'll help you feel better, too."

"I. I'll think." He tightened his arms around L's waist and lay silent for a while, sobs gradually fading.

"I, I want to see Schrodinger and Einstein."
