By the time Light had read the entire owl and was ready to write out a reply, Mikami was already knocking. As expected Mikami is in a bad state now that he knows that the notebook doesn't work, and wants his god to tell him that everything is okay. He locks the door after Mikami enters, knowing that this can only end badly.
"Mikami, have you thought of any reason why the notebook would not work?"
Mikami is on his knees again, though this time only part of it is reverence. He's shaking too much to stand. Near's voice echoes in his mind - you don't remember, then, seeing your god fall...
"I - I was outside the field," he explains. It's not quite babbling yet. "And I spelled the name correctly, I know I did, it was a simple name, John Baker, I got it right, I know..." He looks up at Light, pleading. "Your father. In the Sorting Room, after he attacked me, he used a Summoning Charm to find out whether I had the Note, I thought - I've assumed that he performed it incorrectly..." Please, he doesn't add, tell me he got it wrong.
So, Mikami won't even consider a reason, he just wants to deny that there is anything wrong.
"I doubt my father would get the charm wrong," he stares at Mikami completely serious. "Since the notebook could not be summoned, nor could it work when you are so sure that you got the name right and was out of the no kill zone, then maybe there is something wrong with the notebook itself." There's no maybe about it, but he wants Mikami to realise that himself.

"...but - but I was sure! The names were all there, I checked them before I - they couldn't have!"
