Astronomy Class

Apr 18, 2008 20:36

Bean sat on his desk in the astronomy classroom, waiting for his class to fully assemble. There was no point in sitting behind the desk, since no one would be able to see him, and standing in front of it would just emphasise how small he was ( Read more... )

Well, looking at the floating models from just one angle is hardly 'the information you have'... Near gets up to walk around them, examining them from different vantage points.

"Yes."

Well, that was valuable, to know to be cautious about this man Briggs.

Near paced around the next one, looking at various angles. "What makes you ask?"

Garland was surprised to hear Near ask more about a subject he seemed so ready to clam up about. That could only mean he was asking questions to safeguard himself. If that was the case Garland would make himself sound as innocuous as possible. Cartainly it would be harder to learn anything if Near knew that he wanted to know more because he thought the government might be able learn valuable information from these kids.

As he studied the third constellation, he explained. "Nothing in particular, really. Just a passing observation. Theres a lot Im curious about at Hogwarts, and I've been trying to find out as much as I can about the people that dwell here."

"There are some interesting people here, certainly," Near agreed. "Some of them seem rather dangerous and must be watched carefully." B, for one. "Others interest me because I think I can learn from them. I believe this is Corona Borealis, do you agree?"

Garland had yet to talk to anyone he thought was dangerous. Even with A, he just though the poor boy needed a little guidance.

"There is certainly a lot to learn here. I'm hoping to obtain as much knowledge as possible during my time here. So who have you seen that you wish to learn from?" Certainly someone like Near would pick out a worthwhile person to learn from.

Garland nodded at the constellation. "I do believe you are right."

"Well, almost everyone can be learned from. The question is whether or not it's what they intend to teach." He smiled. "Our current professor seems quite intelligent."

"An interesting and rewarding way to think, Near. Never write anyone off. You'd be surprised what certain people can reveal." He thought back to the events in Twin Peaks which solidified that idea into his head.

"Yes, for such a young boy, he certainly seems to know a lot. There seem to be wuite a lot of extremely intelligent young people at Hogwarts."

"People often reveal more than they intend to." His gaze flickered to Bean. "He's remarkable. Even for here."

"Ah, that hey do. Becuase of the nature of my work I have to be very careful about what I tell people. I work for the Air Force, but even my immediate family knows little beyond that."

He looked at Bean as he walked to the last constellation. By process of elimination he knew which one it was, but he still wanted to figure out the correct way to look at it. "he defintiely seems to be. I wonder how he was brought up. And where."

Near was curious about that as well. Bean didn't quite have the air of a Wammy's House kid, but very similar in some ways.

"Have you asked him?" Although it seemed unlikely to Near that Bean would give him a full and candid answer.

Garland shook his head. "This is the first time I've seen him. You seem to have a special interest in him."

"Teachers tend to draw attention. A friend of mine, for instance, finds the Ancient Runes teacher to be very wise."

"Ancient Runes... Ancient Runes... Mr. Wednesday teach that class, right?" He remembered seeing the sign up sheet a while ago.

"Which friend would that be?"

"His name is Mello." It's hardly a secret that Near and Mello are involved, after all. "Did you take that class?"

Garland made a mental note to talk to Mello and see if he was more open about what was going on with these kids. "No, but I do remember passing the sign up sheet some time ago. This is the first class I've attended since arriving here. As it has something to do with subjects I already have a working knowledge of, I figured it was a good place to start."

"I've taken Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes, and Divination as well as this class, and I've been doing some independent study as well. As infrequent as classes here are, if you want to learn magic that's the only real way."
