"Circumlocutory speech is obfuscatory." A stuck the index and middle fingers of his right hand into his mouth up to the first knuckle, gnawing on them.

Garland nodded in greeting, "I am aware that I have a tendenct to maybe overexplain or overembellish that which could possibly be more simply stated. However because of the intense mental strain I have undergone through years of classified government operations I have found this way speaking to be much easier and much more natural. I'm sorry if this should pose a problem to you but my manner of speech is just as much a part of me as any part of my anatomy."

"Classified, class-i-fied," A sing-songed around his fingertips. "Yes, yes, the secrets, the secrets that change you. They don't understand that here, they don't they don't they don't. Don't understand about experiments."

Garland expected this young many had many secrets of his own. "Ever since my family and I took up residency in Twin Peaks, secrets became a part of our everyday life. One would not expect such a small, mountain town to hold so much below its surface. On the few occasions when that surface tension broke the underlying motives of all those included were staggering in both proportion and complexity. Incidentally, who are they?"

((Placeholder, I'm on my way back to work, but I wanted to get her in here.))

Laura wandered into the Sorting Room with her treecat at her heels. He almost ran smack into them when she stopped dead still.

And stared.

"...Major Briggs?!"

Of all the people Garland expected to see, he supposed his son Bobby's girlfriend who passed away was higher up on the list than most. After all this was an alternate dimension, and he didn't know the rules yet.

"Hello Laura, your presence here seems to indicate this place is even further from what I expected it to be. However it also does worry me. I had my suspicions where you had ended up..."

Garland paused for a moment before continuing. "Perhaps you could clue me in as to where this is?" He couldn't help but be a little suspicious of the poor girl, as he had theorized that she ended up in the Black Lodge.

Laura got her mouth closed and pulled herself together, while Galahad made a circular tour of the Major's ankles, checking him out very much like, though using diffferent senses, the way a normal cat would.

"Um. Yes, of course. Sir." She cleared her throat. "This is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It's in Scotland."

She cleared her throat again. "Um. Suspicions? About where I, umm...?"

Garland sighed, he did hate to be the bearer of bad, and even unsettling, news.

"I cannot say exactly how I obtained this information as I am not at liberty to do so. But I had heard from a reputable source that you had ended up in a place called the Black Lodge."

One of those types who prevaricates around and tries to hide the point behind a wall of words. At least he tries to keep his contracts straightforward.

"So. Air Force."

"Air Force indeed. For over 20 years now," the major said proudly.

"May I ask who you are?"

"Charles Ofdensen. Manager for Dethklok." He held out a hand. "Someone passed through earlier, claimed to be in Air Force, among other services."

"I'm afraid I don't know Dethklok, though from the name I'm sure it must be a rock band of some sort." He shook the man's hand.

"Do you remember the name of this person who passed through?"

"As I have told the other, I know I have a roundabout way of speaking. All I can ask you to do is bear with me and I can try my best to speak in a manner that better suits you. Undortunately because of the ordeals I have been through this manner of speech has become second nature to me."

"How would cheese respond to a situation? It is inanimate."

Unless you're doing it wrong.

"Response implies reaction."

"Not as much a situation, but a dish. The culinary art has many different aspects, and while some cheeses are more than adequate for certain dishes, one would want a versatile cheese for everyday use. When I use the word 'response', I mean the way the cheese interacts with the other ingredients in a dish to create a pleasing overall flavor."

"You know something about cooking?"

Interesting. And useful. L doesn't particularly care about what's going on in the Pentagon these days, but this might do him some good.

"What would your best advice be for someone just learning how to make cheesecake?"

Reply

garland_briggs March 17 2008, 17:51:35 UTC
"Unfortunately I cannot say I know a great deal about cooking. In my line of work one tends to stay very busy indeed, and Im lucky if I get time everyday to sit down and eat a meal, let alone have the time to learn how to cook. I was merely answering the questions that had been laid before to the best of my ability. That being said the best advice I could give you on making a cheesecake would be to either read a cookbook or ask somebody else."

He wasn't sure why, but this youth's somewhat serious and inquisitive nature endeared him to Garland somewhat. "As I'm sure you read on that parchment I so recently had filled out for me, my name is Major Garland Briggs." He extended his hand to the young man.
