::Open RP: Oooh, a library!::

If this was a school, there must be schoolbooks, mustn't there? Still wearing the skull tshirt Mello had given him (an odd contrast with his white pyjama pants), Near explored the hallways curiously, until he found it ( Read more... )

Hodgins had been in the library for the better part of the morning--except when he'd gone out to the Great Hall for coffee every so often. No way in hell was he going to get bitched at for spilling it on priceless books. He strolled back in, hands in his pockets and whistling, and headed back to the table where he had piled a bunch of books on magical creatures. (His progress on trying to organize some sort of taxonomic scheme was going slowly, especially since it was occasionally mind-numbingly boring and he would let it sit until it began to bother him again.) He was pleased to see a new face had wandered in while he'd been out, because people who went to the library voluntarily gained a few points of esteem in his point of view. "Nice shirt, man," he said, before scooting his chair back out and locating where he'd left off.

Not having expected to be addressed, Near looked up, vaguely startled. "Thank you. A friend - " is that the word? I don't think so... " - gave it to me." He looked at the stack of books the other man had selected with interest. "They really exist then... all these creatures? I suppose I'm not as surprised as I would have been, once."

"Friend of yours has good taste," he said absently, hunting around his pockets for his mechanical pencil. He'd never really warmed to the quill-and-ink method. Plus he tended to erase a lot.

"I dunno. I've never seen them, honestly. I thought I saw a unicorn out in the forest one day, but I can't really say for sure. If the stories are true, I'd never get it to come near me, anyway." He gave the guy a self-satisfied grin.

The thought of 'Mello' and 'taste' in close proximity made Near blush faintly. "I should study legends more closely. Is the association between unicorns and virgins universal? And that raises the question, what is their standard for 'virginity'? Is it limited to opposite-sex contact? That would give a certain percentage of the population an advantage at pursuing them."

No wonder Wishbone likes Near. They're both bookworms!

Turlough, on the other hand, was thumbing through a book on hexes, hoping to find an interesting one to try on his furby. He looked up at the white haired man reading a book on charms, sneered slightly, and went back to his book.

Being looked at so disdainfully almost made Near laugh. He'd gotten that sort of treatment before, and was used to letting it roll off his back.

Besides, the book was interesting.

I wander into the library. I figured Near would be here, and I'm not wrong. He is deep in books and theoretical discussion about unicorns and virginity with some wild looking guy. Weird, but okay. I wander over, not wanting to bother him too much. My eyes land on an interesting sounding book, The History of Magic. I flop down in a chair and pull it over and start reading. Thanks to Whammy's house, all of us could read and remember quickly. The book is pretty thick. I figure it'll take me an hour or two to get through it. Maybe three, I amend, when I start reading some of the cracked-out names in it.

Near noticed Mello arrive out of the corner of his eye. It no longer surprised him to realize he was pleased to see him; hardly any point in denying it now, is there? And it's a library. What better place to be?

"Nice place, isn't it?" he asked softly, after Hodgins had left. "So many books, so many new things to learn."

I glance up, a hint of a smile teasing my lips. I'm not gonna give him to much too easily. "Very interesting. Some of it, though, sounds like it was written by a loon." I shake my head a little. "Very biased history book. I'd like to read the other sides, y'know?" No one side ever told the full truth on anything. I lowered the book to the table, leaving it open. "Do you really suppose there are such creatures as..." I shake my head again. "I suppose there have to be giants and ogres, don't there? I mean, we've seen house elves. Logic dictates that if x and y are dependent on each other and x exists, then so must y." I shrug, looking back at the book. "Just kinda makes you rethink what reality is," I add softly.

"There is apparently a class here devoted to the care of magical creatures. Intriguing, isn't it?" Near made a mental note of the title of the book Mello was reading; it would probably be a good one for him to peruse as well. "It really does make the nature of reality seem... I suppose pliable is the word? So much here is alien. But a lot of it is a good sort of alien." Like you not being dead. "Tell me... I've been discussing doing a research project with the fellow who just left. Would you be willing to help?"
