3-Way Sock/Open RP: Even Magic Has a Learning Curve

The Hogwarts library was busy but quiet, except for the murmurs of people studying and quietly conversing.

"Boring!"

"Shh!"

...and except for the table in the far corner, where two teenagers were trying to study. The third... was not.

The third... was Tomo.

Tomo was humming a poor rendition of the Jaws theme as she crouched down behind the table, sticking only the top of her head up and inching towards Jaime's elbow. "Don't even think about it," Jaime informed her, not looking up.

"Aw, come on, I'm just trying to lighten the mood," Tomo said, straightening up and making a face. "Not my fault you don't know how to have fun."

May pointed her wand at Tomo. "Don't make me use this." Tomo stuck her tongue out at May and hopped up to sit on a corner of the table, looking totally unaffected. May turned back to Jaime. "That book make any sense?"

"Kinda," Jaime said, looking over the page. "I mean, it looks simple, but..." He trailed off, uncertain.

"Here, I'll show you." Turning so he could see, May lifted the wand again and went through the motions of a privacy ward, slightly slower than usual so he could see. "Why are you even here?" she asked Tomo.

"'Cause it's fun!" Tomo said loudly. Oddly enough, no one else seemed to take notice.

Jaime couldn't hear what they were saying, but he watched, fascinated, as the wand seemed to be drawing a pattern of light in the air, which spread out like a thin veil and settled over the two girls. "I'm thinking it's working," he said as they continued their silent conversation.

May nodded and canceled the ward as Jaime watched her intently. "Now you try. Do it with her, I'll be honest if it works or not." Tomo was not the person to ask when checking if something was screened.

Jaime sighed, taking one last look at the book before lifting his own wand. "Here goes nothing." He focused on himself and Tomo, making the exact motions that he'd seen May do and was gratified to see the veil of energy drift over them. Except... "Did it work?"

"I can hear you," May said, "So I guess not."

Jaime frowned. "Wonder what I did wrong." He looked back at the book, but then Tomo pounded on the table. "¿Que?" He looked up again, startled to see Tomo saying something, but no sound was coming out of her mouth. "Um. What just happened?"

May smirked. "I think you screened her conversations to herself."

"Oh, man," Jaime groaned, flipping through the book. "Maybe there's something in here about that," he said as Tomo continued to talk and flail in complete silence. "Told you I wasn't good with magic anything."

"I don't know," May answered, giving in to a fit of giggles. "It's almost an improvement."

((Open RP in the library, some nebulous time after Jaime and Lola's trip to Hogsmeade. Come bother my pups - specify in comments if you only want to poke one! Or just stare at and mock the seemingly silent Tomo! She's not silenced, she's just screened to herself, basically.

EDIT: If you haven't tagged and still want to poke at Tomo, I'm pretending that the Maia thread happens after any and all other conversations, so go ahead and I'll play it that way.))
