open RP: a room of one's own

Apr 22, 2007 14:21

Albus had paid a social call on the Headmistress. A social call it was, purely; he saw no sense in sharing with her the kinds of misgivings he had voiced to Minerva. Besides, Furbish was a language lent to the frivolous. Over fruit punch, Kahnooloo babbled about her liking for parties and dancing, and Albus, smiling, allowed as how Hogwarts ( Read more... )

A passerby did happen to come around a few moments later. Molly Weasley was headed back to Gryffindor, after having taken a trip to the popcorn room. Clearly, she never should have left Hogwarts, as during her absence Fred had become popcorn. She'd stared at that name for a long time, eyes brimming with tears, scolding herself for being a horrible mother and not being there to prevent that fate to befall her son again.

She was still feeling depressed when she noticed the room that hadn't been there before, and blinked when she read the name. Dumbledore? Really? At Hogwarts?

So of course she had to knock. "Professor?" she called, her voice tremulous. "Is it... Is it really you?"

Now that was a familiar voice, one of Dumbledore's own dear Order. "You know the drill, Molly," he called cheerfully. "Ask me a question."

Molly couldn't help smiling. "Oh, yes, I remember. What's your favorite jam, Professor?"

"My favorite flavor of jam is raspberry," Dumbledore replied, also with an audible smile.

Steph could not read Latin. Not at all. She was going to be optimistic, and hope that the plaque said 'Open office hours'.

She rapped hesitantly on the door. "Excuse me, Professor Dumbledore?"

The door swung open at her knock, and a jovial voice welcomed her: "That would be me. Do come in."

"Thanks!" Steph reached into her bag, and pulled out a dog-eared copy of an introductory DADA text. "I was looking at disarmament spells, and was wondering if you could help me with some of the pronunciation. Cause, um, I've been turning things into other things. Like animals. Which is cool, but not what I was trying to do."

"Oh! I'm Stephanie Brown. Hi." She looked sheepish. Manners, much?

"I would be most happy to help you with your pronunciation of wizarding Latin," Albus said. "Turning animals into other animals is nothing to be scoffed at, mind. You may have a natural talent for Transfiguration!"

Lunch was all right, but Ofdensen's brain was on overdrive as he walked back to Hufflepuff.

He was thinking of various things:

Pickles and finding 'brutal' people (yes, he's fully aware of that, but he'll let Pickles ask first),
the machinations of the Scandinavians (he doesn't know what, but he knows they're up to something),
his progression in magic (or lack thereof. He may have to do some independent study),
the promising new students (and the ah...not so promising),
his...well, he supposed it was the beginning of some kind of friendship, with a few people here,
the earler duel with Aayla and that damned kiss

Ofdensen stopped and rubbed his head. "I shouldn't think of that." Continuing to rub his head, he walked down the hall.

A glint caught his eye, and he saw the plaque.

Professor emeritus, huh? Maybe he could provide some insight on the lack of classes.

He knocked on the door.

For a moment, all was silent. Then the tumblers within the door's lock began to turn of their own accord, and the door itself swung open.

"Come in," said a voice from within. It sounded deep, old, strong.

Ofdensen blinked. No one was at the door, yet it opened.

He supposed he shouldn't be surprised, after all, this is a school for magic.

He took a step into the room, slightly amused by all the clutter.

"Professor...Dumbledore, was it?"

"It is," Albus confirmed. "And you are?" The question was not arch in the slightest. Albus's voice registered a genuine interest in the answer.

It wasn't as much the twinkling of the plaque as it was the inscription on it that caught Damien's eye. Professor Emeritus. He couldn't remember ever having met a person who could claim to - or even admit to - holding that title. Curious, he knocked on the door. A person who was proud to announce his or her position in the school was surely a person he was interested in meeting.
