"A cricket bat?" Molly wouldn't have thought of that, but then it wasn't like she knew anyone who even had one back home. "I'm not sure I could handle a parchment doobie, but I don't think I've got anything that would work better." She was rifling through her drawers, which were filled with all kinds of weird crap but not, unfortunately, with anything useful. She did find an ancient pack of cards, some old chewing gum, marbles, a fuzzy peppermint, and unknown quantities of tangled string, but no papers. "Parchment it is, I think."
Chance shrugs and laughs. "Not sure how well it'll work. Either that or we transfigure something into a pipe. I haven't been to a single transfiguration class -- how about you?"
Molly abandoned her search. "I've never taken a class, but I've read some of the textbook," she said. "It's worth a try, though God knows what we're likely to actually wind up with."
She picked up a blown-glass paperweight. Theo's pipes had usually been glass, so at least they were starting with the same medium. She doubted the book had any instructions on how to make a pipe, but she dug it out anyway. "If this works, it's probably going to be a big pipe," she said--the paperweight wasn't small, and she knew from reading that mass had to stay about the same.
Stifling a goodnatured snicker behind her hand, Chance regards the paperweight. "Hmm. Well, it'll look right in everything but size, then." The frenzied swirl of colors shot through the blown glass is very much in keeping with the rest of the room's decor, improvised blacklight and all. Not Chance's scene, not that it really matters at present.
"I'm sort of curious to see what will happen if you can't make a pipe out of it," she comments as Molly leafs through the book. "What else could it turn into, you know. Maybe something alive."
