The portrait of the Fat Lady swung open silently, and Galadriel's smiling face popped out of it. "Friend Demyx, now, is it? No longer Meyd? Welcome, and enter." Still smiling, she beckoned him in to the short passage to Gryffindor's common room.
By the fireplace, comfortable red armchairs sat before a bright and merry fire, a bottle of wine and glasses on a table between them. A silver tea set also shone softly nearby, with cookies and pastries on a small platter.
Galadriel motioned Demyx to a chair, and seated herself in the other, tucking her feet up under her. "My roomate, Penelope, is teaching me to be a hostess in this world. If I do not have it quite right, please let me know - I wish to be a good one!" She laughed, and looked at Demyx, eyes shining. "So how are you this day, friend?"
Um... there was something in your letter about "the heart behind the Heartless," or something like that? *This seems to have been weighing on Demyx's mind.* I think you've made a mistake. Meyd... Meyd's the heart. I'm not.
Galadriel offered both wine and tea to Demyx, then answered him.
"I am sorry, but I know nothing of this, Demyx." Galadriel's faced showed concern. "I met Meyd at my sorting. You say you are he. But also you say that you have no heart. Can you explain to me? Whence came this change, and how can one live without a heart?"
I'm not too clear on the technical stuff, but the "heart" thing is a tricky concept. It's not exactly the one in your body, but there's something physical about it; when a heart leaves a body, it can actually be seen. Like a Valentine heart or something with light around it. Or darkness...
There's the thing. When someone gives into the darkness in their heart completely, they lose it. The heart becomes a Heartless, with body and soul replaced by the power of darkness. But sometimes, the original body and soul have a will of their own. They become a Nobody, and if the new will is strong enough, they still look mostly like themselves. That's what I am; one of only fourteen humanoid Nobodies in all the worlds.
But, I guess, if there are human-looking Nobodies, there are human-shaped Heartless. And Meyd's one of them, it seems. Mine.
