Things at Hogwarts seemed to have quieted down a little in the last week. Apparently the 'Holiday Season' madness was over. Even so, habit had brought Sanzo to a vacant classroom in an isolated part of the castle so he could get some reading done ( Read more... )

"Well, Gojyo is a rather skilled player on his own, and I didn't have to accompany him too often. Though I suppose you're right -- it seems to be an accurate enough appraisal, at any rate. Hakkai smiled cheerfully in return, completely unfazed. "They must value your opinion, at the very least," he said simply, "or that's how I happen to see it." He laughed softly, in a way that seemed to dismiss even his own ideas. "Of course, that's just the opinion of an infrequent visitor to the temple. It's very possible that it's as you say, and that they only tolerate you as much as you tolerate them, which seems to be very little."

Folding his hands on the table, he watched Sanzo with a mild, bland look of interest. "No, I don't imagine very many people would expect a monk to ask for cigarettes, nor would they be willing to offer them. What changed between then and your arrival at Chang'An to get you into the habit, then, if I may ask?"

At first, Hakkai frowned a little at the monk, before finally mirroring the smirk a little (albeit a little tentatively). "Perhaps we could, though from a safe distance, as you said. And possibly while standing behind shields charmed against any other magic spells."

Sanzo's eyes narrowed, trying to decide if Hakkai was being critical by mentioning his lack of tolerance, or just observant. Sometimes it was hard to tell. He decided to let it go as an observation. If Hakkai wanted to provide criticism, he could damn well come out and say it instead of making veiled references ( ... )
