Although I have a bottle of Patron and SoCo sitting on my dining room table....I'm not gonna drink more than usual. What did St. Patrick ever do for me? I'm gonna wik-oogle him and find out. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who has no idea why people drink on this "high holy day".

Kyle Smith made a good point in yesterday's NY Post: "Guinness is owned by the British firm Diageo [...] 'Danny Boy' was written by an English lawyer who never set foot in Ireland [...] St. Patrick himself, a citizen of Roman Britain who was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. Let's review: a holiday named after a Brit inspires people to drink British beer while singing a British song."

Thanks! I win at Internet research!

I think people drink because they believe that all Irish people drink heavily. You know, like a stereotype or something? That's only a guess, though. However, Wikipedia says that, "The widespread use of alcoholic beverages on St. Patrick's Day may be rooted in the fact that the Roman festival of the Bacchanalia, a celebration of the deity Bacchus (to whom wine was sacred), was on 17 March" although it offers no citation, making me believe that someone just made it up. Cheers!
