I love it when people use the language that politicians are afraid of...but still, I have to disagree with the "fuck the heartland" attitude. When you ignore the issues of the heartland, they come to the cities--and that's where trouble starts. Moreover, a lot of the "heartland" is looking more and more like "cookie-cutter hill"--McMansions left and right, and the people moving to these architectural atrocities are the people who are intolerant, racist, homophobic bigots. So you might still have to worry about wooing suburbanites, with their family values and what-all.
