A Gathering of Snapish Views (from others)

I'm cutting and pasting in a bunch of quotes from the loose_canon board of responses I got to my ideas about Snape and Dark Magic. It's for my own use, and I'll put it behind a cut, but if anyone wants to see it, have at. First and foremost, though, a link to a most excellent essay by bohemianspirit. If you missed that one, it's worth a look.

And now the excerpts from loose_canon posts: )

Not sure if you're looking for thoughts on this, but I found the above discussion interesting and wanted to add something re the parchment. It might be something that you've considered and discarded, but I read that scene as Snape knowing who the Marauders were, assuming it was a prank of Lupin's, and using the pretext of 'dark magic' to confront Lupin about it.

Given his reaction to Harry snooping round in his pensieve, he doesn't seem thrilled at the idea of people learning about how he was bullied, so it must have been a nasty shock finding Harry with a piece of parchment that seemed to know things about it-and had Lupin's nickname on it. So I agree with you that it wasn't a serious remark.

And since Harry has already seen the diary in CoS, it isn't too far-fetched for Snape to expect him to believe the possibility of it being dark.

Oh, please, feel free to comment all you want, anytime. Your reading is exactly what I meant when I said I had never taken that "Dark Magic" taunt as anything more than you did. The loose_canon board is very enamored of the idea, mostly because there's so little (and such contradictory) information about Dark Magic in the series, and having one more clue to work with (if you read it as a serious comment) gives more grist for the debate mill ( ... )
