Additional influences would include a whole lot of Robert Service poetry and operating a low earth orbit ground station in Poker Flat, Alaska (remotely) for several years. Oh, and dealing regularly with the ground station at Svalbard, Norway.

to answer the question over there about where my impressions were formed, i would have mentioned jack london and i have visited alaska. and i used to love the yearly focus on some obscure sports channel when the iditarod was running.
