The Endgame

Hikaru brushed the stones off the board and recreated the game again. He could see the intricate pattern of his mistakes; his Go was too passionate, aggressive even. With each stone he laid, he could see his forceful moves and Touya’s frustratingly calm responses. It had been two weeks since he kissed Touya; two weeks since he spilled his guts to his patiently listening rival.

It had been two long weeks and he was still waiting for a response.

Had he read the signals wrong? Hikaru had played it safe in the beginning, his opening moves predictable and cautious. He had sped up a little in the midgame, moving closer to Touya’s territory, and he’d merely met him halfway with a smile. But in the endgame, he’d gotten sloppy in his impatience. He was lost to the game, and now he feared he might lose more than he bargained for.

But unlike the stones on the goban where he quite obviously lost, his game with Touya was not finished yet.

He wiped the stones off the board once more and started again, waiting for Touya to make the next move.
