Roy Porter is a really good author - I currently have his "English Society in the 18th century" standing here, just waiting to be read. And oddly enough, reading books about medicine is not so bad if you can imagine they're about our Navyboys and their contemporaries... ;) Ah, the joys of fandom!

Where are you finding all these things?!
Oh, the thesis just popped out while I was googling whereas the article is via MedLine, a search engine for biomedical researchers. It seems there are a few scholarly journals devoted to History of Medicine.
