1.) ... you can send them fan fiction about characters they have never read about and they will at least check the fics out, and maybe even read one or two, instead of deleting the mail like a RL friend might do. They may even become interested in the characters

Shared torture being the other side of fannish friendship, which I suppose accounts for me panicking some months ago over certain Farscape spoilers and thus forcing you to read them.

It's just in one of my minor fandoms, one of those I read but am not active in otherwise. There's a few of those.
