Truth. What's next? My bet is fan wikis -- but still, the ability to interact in the comments is something unique (thus far) to blog sites. A new blog site coming along combining the best of LJ and the best of wikis will rake it in. (in fact you see exactly that dynamic in some of the professional CMS systems, like DotNetNuke)
That said, I think LJ will always be around in some form, just like the really old fan archives and forum boards are still around today, even as dusty and unused as they are. Still, a lot of history could get lost if a comm goes down for whatever reason, much less private sites like ours getting deleted. Can say it keeps me up at night -- and I know OTW is working to find ways of archiving fandom history -- but still, it will disappointing when it inevitably happens.

Hm... if there don't already exist things like that, I'm pretty sure that I could write a perl script which could do that... but not this year. (-> Feel free to shove me if you should really need such backup at some point in the future.)
