I just looked through all my old paintings and drawings, my materials - watercolours, ink, brushes, pens, my books about medieval art... It's a hobby I gave up nearly ten years ago

Well, I'd just about forgotten about it, too! *g*hmpfJanuary 31 2007, 18:44:26 UTC
I was *really* surprised by how good some of this stuff was. One piece fell out of a book where apparently I'd used it as a bookmark, and it just sort of... stunned me. Like, "did I *really* make this?" I'd completely forgotten about most of it. Will get it scanned, I promise. There isn't much left, I'm afraid - I gave most of it away, way back when. But looking at the stuff that's left reminded me - somewhat painfully - of some great ideas I had back then, for really ambitious pieces I never got around to.
A good friend of mine makes her living as a "Gerichtszeichnerin" (I don't know the English word for it) and though she has very regularly very big ups and downs and even very much trouble to get enough money to pay the rent with when she has a month with few comissions, she never ceases to say that she wouldn't want to do anythingelse. She's doing that job for years now and is not regretting it.
As for sponsoring: From that friend mentioned above I know there is a so called "Künstler Sozialkasse" that helps artists with their costs. How much they pay and how you qualify for that I don't know, though. But I could ask my friend if you want to know more.
I know about the Künstlersozialkasse.hmpfJanuary 31 2007, 20:34:43 UTC
I know artists, too, so, need to bother your friend. I can ask them. But I know enough about what that kind of life is like to know I don't have what it takes. Or maybe I'm not desperate enough yet. Maybe I really need to fail at everything else before I can dare to be an artist.

Interesting. I just re-discovered art: Designed some nice bonecarvings in the last 5 months, and since December I'm back into drawing. Hard to get into it again after so many years.

It is sure a hard thing to decide, I agree. I hope you'll get a chance to do what you really long to do one day.
