It’s funny, how in such stories Methos’ “friends” punish him when he doesn’t fit pretty picture of him they make, the Procrustean bed of their understanding. Next step usually - demands of pound of flesh in the form of various atonements. Explanation, baring of soul, apology - that’s the price of their friendship. Again and again he must do something to atone - every friend has a price for him to pay. No surprise that he is so solitary

All I can say, that such tendency in fic stories quite logically follows from the series itself :).
