my first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man

Quite often I hear phrases that really boil my blood. Usually it's when people are teaching really bad ideas about God, especially to young teenagers. Since you guys are my friends here, I think you probably know this. I believe I contemplated hiring a teen-aged actor to yell obscenities at a youth pastor recently when a friend was telling me about ( Read more... )

Political party v. Texas schoolboy football swimin_upstream October 9 2006, 22:17:43 UTC
"I will resist with all I have turning into the kind of person who feels for their political party like a Texan feels about his local High School football team.

NOBODY has ever had that strong a feeling about his political party nor about nearly anything else.

Well yeah...I guess it was sort of a literary comparison =).

There are few things in public life as bad as people who hate the right or the left, just because it is the right or the left.

Amen, amen, amen and amen! I have two friends who are into politics, both staunch Republicans, and both Christians. One keeps her politics completely seperate from her Christianity (probably because she grew up with stuanch Republican non-Christian parents), and one is on the Dobson wavelink. I can talk politics with the first (though I don't often at all), but with the second I only get frustrated, becuase it seems to cause such narrowness. And there is a straight and narrow path, but that doesn't mean we become narrow people.

Werd. That kind of thing is so hard to communicate through. I hope that I don't become that way in my own leanings, but I think that I am so afraid of making an uneducated decision that I am well protected.

I feel like that "Kingdom and a King" quote is something I have been looking for, and even though it sounds pretty arrogant, I think removing politics from my relationship with God purifies my relationship a little bit. I wouldn't really mind dying for my country, but I hope I would jump at the chance to die for my King.

for the record, "a new law" is MY FAVORITE song from MOCKINGBIRD.
I'm exceedingly glad that you not only like derek, but have posted about him :)!

and, this is my favorite line from your post:

"...and I guess I have now publicly shaken off the last of the ideas I took on myself when I was a Sunday School kid who took it all for granted."

it's a strange, and liberating, process to go through, isn't it?

Yeah New Law is awesome. It's so blatant and angrycool. Yes it is a strange process. I keep thinking "well I won't go passed this line here," and then I think "why not? I don't agree with that line at all."

I read this blog for the second time this morning and it is starting to come together in my head. The first time it was sort of disjointed ( ... )

i just don't talk politics. i'll sometimes listen. but i have no set opinions either way, really. i can see validity in almost all opinions. i don't want to vote about gay marriage because i still have a hard time. do i condone and encourage a lifestyle that i don't believe is right, just because i don't think i should hate, judge, or condemn it? and i know i'm never going to out an end to homosexuality? that's a tough one for me.
and it's funny. during the last presidential election, i wrote blog, somewhere, just expressing how much i don't like the constant bashing of people because of their views, and the division caused by poloitical parties. it has become unamerican to just love people, careless of their political affiliations.
and...i love both derek webb and pedro. good sources!
