And they played a really harsh, beautiful, acapella cover of "Hallelujah" that made it more wrecking

of course they did *weepz for poor Ryan who has now SO MUCH ANGST AND HEARTBREAK come here puppy*

See, this works. It's sort of like Cedric dying in HP4 the movie. It's huge and heartbreaking and takes our trio to a new place and really affects our hero, but it's not a saga-stopping, Wash-killing, fandom-betraying moment. Except for all those chicks who identify with Marissa. in which case they have bigger problems.

ETA: Oh, yeah. That did the trick. Nothing like a good old fashioned soap-opera-dramedy inspired crying jag to release the pent-up crap.

Reason #5 to watch the OC. The sailing away bit always did me good too, to quote David Webster.

I'm going to see if I can track down the artist for that song. OMG, it's Imogen Heap!

Poor Ryan. Of course, there was much flashing back and juxtaposing of Ryan carrying Marissa away from various other near-tragic accidents. And you're right about why Marissa works. And I choked on my cereal over your very valid point that the girls who are losing thier shit over it probably didn't have a firm grasp on it to begin with. God, I'm glad I'm not 14-18 anymore.

I have a few standbys for the I-need-a-good-cry fix. I was so grateful the night season 1 ended and I realized I had a new one.

Hee! Great byline. However, the writer has crap grammar (who/whom!!!) and is factually sketchy. (Seth and Summer are not going to the same college; she's going to Brown in September, he's following to RI College of Design in January.)

Sorry. I was talking to one of my old J school friends yesterday about the fact that, 12 years later, we're still unable not to copy edit any printed matter placed before us, and the social repercussions thereof.
