Yeah, I realise the second meaning as well, as in a lower-class person. The second question is a little misleading; the sentence calls for the superlative of common i.e. most common = commonest?? I said "commonest" because AFAIK there isn't any sort of second meaning for it.

Since we know that it's "more serious," though, I guess it makes sense if "most common" follows?

Sigh.

Gut says commonest, brain says most common. I guess this is one of the drawbacks of not actually knowing the rules of English and operating solely on "it feels right" AND NOW IT FEELS IFFY :(
