Title: Fragile Fireworks
Rating: G
Pairing: HitsugixSakito-ish
Disclaimer: Pure fiction, I own nothing.
Comments: Each little scene is a triple drabble because...it just seemed like a good idea. I used their real names here, because it takes place before Nightmare. Mitsuo = Hitsugi and Takahiro = Sakito, for the curious.
one two Summer dug its claws in the last week before school began, final determined display causing even the perseverance of the cicadas to waver in the heat. Relief came at night when the sun hid its blistering face, though the muggy, sluggish air barely stirred. At least it wasn’t thick enough to cut with a knife.
“I found some fireworks in the garage,” Mitsuo told his friend, standing in the last flicker of sunset on his friend’s porch. “It’s gonna be our last year of high school, we should celebrate.”
“Ok, I guess.” Standing in the doorway, Takahiro could tell by the way the other boy’s eyes wouldn’t settle that his spoken reason was a front. A subtle offer of simple distraction. He crammed his feet into the dusty sandals and stepped out. The two walked in silence, slow in the humid atmosphere, choosing the closest bridge.
Quaint sparks reflected in the water below, the touch of flame igniting delicate sparklers in both the boys’ hands. Though the sticks burned out quickly, the flickers of light were held in detached wonder in Taka’s eyes between each set. He could feel his friend’s eyes on him, confirmed with a sly glance upward from his seated position, but he didn’t understand it. Didn’t understand the gently troubled look in his eyes or the inexplicable attachment they shared, just as Mitsuo didn’t understand the simultaneous tug in his chest. Strange things, tentative emotions barely recognized for what they were.
The boys returned their respective attention to the fireworks in their hands. Another flick of Mitsuo’s lighter lit a fresh set to wave in slow circles and figure-eights off the edge of the bridge. “I think we should do this band thing,” Takahiro mused, half serious.
“Yeah, me too.” Mitsuo grinned around the flying sparks.
