Like Clockwork
It’s the eighth one of these he’s done, the precedent having been set by the crew too early; ‘till death do us part coming and going from laughter to tears, like goddamned clockwork.
And it kills him, watching their first married kisses dissolve into sobs as he sends the better halves of hearts out into the black abyss. It kills him, crawling into bed afterwards - for days afterward - listening to the steady pulse of his own love, wondering when it, too, will inevitably linger not beneath his ear, but among the stars.
Arms tighten around him, then; knowingly. Like clockwork.
