To See Her
He sees her; at a medical conference. She’s running down a flight of stairs; panting. She runs into him as she rounds the railing, her lab-coat trailing behind her like a butterfly’s wings. She apologizes with a catch in her voice, catch in her breath, and she smiles like the gentle glow that seeps through the windows in the stairwell. He smiles back, and carries on his way; forgets about her as he dreams.
He sees her; on a beach. Her breasts heave as she drinks in the salt on the air, and the sight of her twists in his chest like a fist, a noose; she is like stained glass -- fragile, filtering the sun. Beautiful, yet breakable. Powerful. Unending.
He sees her; bloody, dangling. No breath left in her lungs; and likewise, he forgets how to breathe. This is why he lets himself keep failing. Because he can’t do any worse than this.
He sees her; beneath him. His hand curls around her neck as he thrusts inside her, as she moans; his thumb rests against her throat, and he measures her heartbeat, memorizes its frantic song; this is right.
He sees her; like he was always meant to.
