Good article. Any idea what sort of welding they used then?

Also curious how safe the plants were and how many workers had health problems later.

I honestly don't know the particulars of the welding techniques used then, or how safe the shipyards and other facilities building ship parts were. I do know that female workers played a large role in construction, including welding, and also in Southern shipyards such as Mobile and New Orleans, there were heated, sometimes violent conflicts between white and black workers. Mobile's shipyard was ultimately segregated following a riot that ensued after a number of black workers were made welders, which was one of the more elite jobs.
