Wierd Coincidences

These are the things that go through my mind...

It is funny how similar Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great were.

Both inherited the throne at a rather young age
Both saw family members killed as a result of palace intrigues
Neither liked to have his authority questioned
Both fought wars against the Swedes
Both killed their heirs

Yes...Ivan was I think more "terrible" however---think of what he did to Novrogod! No wonder Elizabeth I wouldn't marry him (I'm sure she had other reasons as well...). I read his biography and still have nightmares.

Russia has not had the best of luck in general!

Its true, while Peter was a fairly brutal leader, he personally put to death about 1000 of his elite guard for plotting a coup while he was gallavanting about Europe, he was not nearly as scary as Ivan IV.

I love the prediction made at his birth: "He was born with two teeth, with one he will devour us, with the other he will devour you." I don't remeber exactly who said it, but it was a ruler in a bordering territory upon hearing about the birth.
