Oh it's a really good book. You would've never thought that an American male wrote it, because a lot of the details and speech, etc really makes you believe that a real-life woman is telling the story. The narrative is really amazing, it's one of my all-time favorite books ^^ I picked it up at Costco or something a couple years back and just started reading, then my uncle bought it for me. I finished it in a couple days because I never put it down lol ^^ I can't wait for the movie though ^^ Lots of popular Asian actresses and actors - Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Watanabe~ ^^
I was - well... kinda still am - a little nervous about the fact that they used Chinese actors/actresses for 1/2 the cast in a Japanese-related film -.-; I have no problem with it, it just felt so odd because the two cultures are so distinguished from each other and for some reason didn't feel quite right that the lead 3 females are all Chinese... you'd think a Japanese female would play at least one of the main roles. However, I was reading this article that said since the book was based from an American's point of view, it's ok since the story is kinda like a modern fantasy so it doesn't matter quite as much as if the film were a historical piece like Last Samurai. Still... it's just ... odd. I guess when we watch films on Irish, German, British people, etc we don't really care if the actors are even what their character's ethnicities are, but for some reason we get a little weirded when we hear about a Chinese playing Japanese, etc -.-; Well, it's Hollywood so I can care less XD I just wanna see the film~ It looks so

This is Memoirs of a Geisha movie that just finished production in February, it's in the final workings right now so it will be in theaters December or so. Half the cast is Chinese, which weirded me out considering all the cultural differences, etc. I just felt it would make more sense for Japanese to play Japanese since they would probably have a better understanding of geisha than outer cultures, but that's just my take on it. As long as the actors and actresses feel authentic enough, it works for me. I mean, we have Japanese acting as Chinese in some movies, so it's fine -.-; just taking a little while to get used to. Geisha seems like a really hard role to play @.@
That's cool, I want to watch it. I guess it doesn't matter too much whether it's Japanese or Chinese.. still Asian! =P Geishas are very unique people, I think it's pretty hard for anyone to play.
There was slight controversy over the cast when it was first announced, but it's all good now. Yeah, a geisha role sounds pretty hard to play any day, lots of rules, etiquette, restrictions, etc @.@ it sounds so mind-boggling, yet so pretty. I can't wait for the movie XD
