Sarah had to admit: Brittany, France was a change of scenery for them. The seaside town she and John had found themselves sent to was awfully quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of London. It was, in fact, a little too quiet for Sarah Evans' taste. A little too slow. Certainly not the holiday she would have chosen ( Read more... )

Except John was already awake. In all his years of traveling, he had never once come across a mermaid. He had been too excited last night to stay asleep. He ended up sneaking down to the local pub to see what he could find out. Suffice it to say, being a Londoner looking for mermaids is not a good way to make friends in Brittany.

Too early. Too early, too early, too early!

Sarah groaned and turned around in the bed, trying to hide her face in the pillow. She had no idea why John was up this early. It was yet another strange John Smith fact. He ought to be asleep, like the rest of the sane world.

"Jooooohn. Too early."

John jumped off the bed and ran to the window, pulling open the curtains so there was no barrier between the sun and room. As soon as he had opened the window, he ran back to the bed, diving down so he landed right next to Sarah.

"Too early?" he said into the pillow Sarah was hiding under, "No such thing. Come on now, mermaids to find. No time for sleeping. Come on, then."

That wasn't fair. Now there was far too much sun in the room, the annoying alarm was still going off, and to top it all off, there was a bulk in the bed where it had been emptied only moments ago.

His voice was too loud, too.

"Mermaids ought to come out later, then. 's time to be sleeping, not searching for a scoop."
