It had been a lead Sarah Evans had been investigating for weeks now. Rumours of a cyberman in central London had been plaguing The Inquisitor office ever since the lot of them had mostly vanished from the face of Earth. This latest, reported by a middle-aged tube worker right off the midnight shift, seemed just about as skeptical as any other ( Read more... )

The sound of screeching cars and honking horns heralded the Doctor's arrival to where he'd promised Sarah he'd meet her. Converses sped across the pavement at a full pelt, missing a silver Mercedes with just the brush of an undone shoelace. He only skidded to a stop when he reached the other side, hopping a bit as he yelled out to the driver.

"Oi! Watch where you're going with that! Two eyes on the road is the normal prerequisite for driving!"

The spitting of vulgarities as the indignant car sped haughtily past him made his mouth drop open in offence, and he nearly made to chase the thing down the road before remembering he had, for all intents and purposes, an appointment.

"Sarah!" He ran up to her and gushed out his usual greeting. "Morning! Have you been well? Sorry I'm late."

She could hear him before she could see him. Sarah rolled her eyes at the scene before remembering that she ought to take out her camera to snap a few photographs of it. Just to shove into John's face later as she lectured him on the safeties of street crossing.

As it was, he made it over before she had a chance. "You? Sorry you're late? That'll be the day, John. Do learn to come on time, will you? For all we could have known, that bloody cyberman could have shown his face and I wouldn't have been here waiting."

John. John. John. The name still rolled about in his head every time he heard it and he still wasn't sure if he'd ever get used to the idea. He wasn't even sure if he liked it, some label that reminded him how human he was at the moment, but it fit (not really) and it called for less bouts of useless confusion when people asked who he was. 'John' was less complicated than 'Doctor', no matter what universe you were in.

He quickly straightened out his clothes as she made her quips. "Har har, very funny. And yes, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm late. I'm capable of feeling sorry! And I'm capable of being on time! I just slept in! I didn't even know I could do that, sleep in. Spent centuries needing a few hours every week or so and suddenly I need eight hours a night! It's disorienting."

He didn't expect her to understand any of that as he knelt down to do up a trainer.

"You're being impossible again, aren't you?"

He had such a strange habit of doing that. Talking about people and events that couldn't ever possibly exist. Ascribing himself all the power of the universe and more, sometimes. It was all a part of his stories. Stories, if you asked Sarah, that seemed to be as ingrained in his being as that messy brown hair of his.

She sighed, finally fishing out her camera to take a photograph of him doing up the trainer. Sarah smirked as she took another picture. "Late night on the town, then?"
