Chapter Five:
Kangin blinked, the light filtering through the window hurting his eyes. He rolled over, noticing that the window had bars on it. Sitting up quickly, he looked around. He was in a jail cell. Sighing, he rubbed his temples, trying to get rid of the headache he had.
“So, you’re finally awake?” someone asked from behind a book.
“Why am I in a jail cell?” Kangin replied.
G.O set the book down and stared at him. “Isn’t it against the law to attempt to kill someone? You tried to kill three of us. We’re waiting for the mayor to decide on your sentence.”
“The mayor? Who’s the mayor?”
“I am,” Seungho interrupted. He walked into the room, glaring at Kangin. “My friends’ lives were in your hands, but it seems the roles are switched now.”
“Look, go ahead and do whatever the hell you want to me. I don’t care!”
“But they do.” Seungho pointed to a bench that Kangin hadn’t noticed before. Leeteuk, Heechul, and Hankyung were all staring at the ceiling as if it were interesting. “They explained everything, and even saved my friends. I owe them my gratitude.”
“So? What does that have to do with me?”
“Shut up, Kangin,” Leeteuk muttered. His arms were crossed over his chest. He gazed at his friend behind the bars. “You know how great of a friend you’ve been to us, right? You helped us through the rough training the military threw at us.”
“You helped us climb through the ranks. Always staying equal to you,” Heechul added.
“Your friends here are trying to sway my decision.”
“What is your decision?” Kangin was nervous about the answer, but he was going to find out regardless.
“That’s the funny thing, Kangin. Even though I haven’t decided yet on what we should do to you, they still stand by you, trying to make me lessen the sentence.” Seungho sighed. “I’ll think about it tonight. I need some sleep.” He left the room, rubbing his eyes as he did so.
“You’re lucky Seungho’s a fair person,” Hankyung told Kangin. “Most would just kill you if you tried to kill their loved ones.”
“Go to sleep, Kangin. We’ll be back tomorrow morning to hear the sentence.” Leeteuk stood and exited the room.
Kangin glared after him. “Fag…”
“Yah!” Heechul and Hankyung yelled together. Although he whispered it, Kangin was startled when the two yelled.
“Don’t call Teuk that, Kangin.”
“Why not? He is one.” Kangin leaned back against the wall.
“Because, he’s…” Heechul looked to Hankyung. The two of them knew, but should they tell Kangin?
“He’s getting the same sentence as you,” G.O supplied. “He told Seungho that he’ll willingly take any sentence alongside you. That he’d endure it since you’re his friend.”
“Teuk said that?”
“Yeah. He even said that he wouldn’t change his mind.”
Kangin was left in silence when Hankyung, Heechul, and G.O walked out. He couldn’t stop thinking about what they said. Knowing Leeteuk, he’d keep his word. Just knowing that made Kangin uneasy. If the sentence was to rot away in a prison, Teuk would crumble. He was too soft for prison. Heck, he was too soft for the military. That very thing is what made Kangin help him during the military training. Sighing, he figured he’d sleep a little before tomorrow. Whatever happened, he had to stop Leeteuk from standing by his side, always allowing himself to get hurt for Kangin’s sake.
“You’re really going to agree to any sentence I give him?” Seungho asked Leeteuk.
The elder of the two nodded. “He’s my friend, so I’ll take half of the responsibility. Plus, it’s partially my fault. When my uncle died, I was crushed. Being the good friend he was, Kangin wanted revenge just as much as I did.”
“What made you change your mind?”
“Seeing Doojoon with his soul mate and their kids…” Leeteuk looked at Seungho, his eyes soft. “I had been keeping an eye on Doojoon while in the military. I watched the very day as his dad took Junhyung out of his room and dragged him away. The whole time Doojoon was quiet.”
“You were there? You were there last year when we…?” Seungho’s eyes were wide from shock. “But, we didn’t see you. I’d have remembered if we crossed you?”
Leeteuk chuckled. “You did cross me. I was just careful. Did you ever wonder how that truck seemed to be there, keys inside, right when you needed it? Or when those trying to find you were led passed the bushes you hid under, without so much as a glance backwards?”
Seungho’s eyes grew wider and he gasped. When he spoke, his voice was just a whisper. “You were helping us…” Leeteuk nodded. “But why? Why did you help us?”
“I was in pain seeing two people who were so perfect for each other being forced apart. Doojoon is more than a cousin to me. He’s more like a brother. Seeing him in pain that day made me want to do something. So I did. I apologize for eavesdropping that day.”
“What?”
“I was standing outside the door when you had met to discuss your plan. I knew which groups were going where and when. I knew the signals you were going to give. I knew everything.” He looked down, deciding to stare at his feet.
“You claim to know everything. Tell me who went where, for confirmation.”
“Doojoon led Hyunseung, Kikwang, Yoseob, and Dongwoon as the rescue team. T.O.P led Taeyang, Seungri, Daesung, and Jiyong as infantry.” Leeteuk looked at Seungho, who was gawking at him in amazement. “And you led Cheondoong, Mir, G.O, and Joon as the diversion.”
“You knew the whole plan…” Seungho swallowed, trying to absorb this information. “You knew everything.”
Leeteuk frowned at Seungho’s reaction. “Are you alright?” When Seungho shook his head, Leeteuk walked forward and helped the younger sit on the couch in his office. Pulling out Seungho’s phone, he went to contacts and searched for Siwon’s number. “Come to Seungho’s office, please. I think he’s going into shock.”
A few minutes later, Siwon hurried into Seungho’s office followed by Joon, G.O, and Cheondoong. They were asked to wait outside while Siwon examined Seungho. Leeteuk sat quietly in the chair while the others paced back and forth down the hallway.
“Spill it, Park,” Cheondoong ordered. “What’d you say to Seungho to send him into shock?”
Leeteuk stared at the floor. “I was there last year,” he mumbled.
“What? Speak up,” Joon stated.
Leeteuk stood abruptly, making them all take a step back. “I was there last year when Commander Yoon took Junhyung away from Doojoon! I was there when you talked about your plan to rescue him and I was there when the plan went into action. I knew about all of it. I knew so much that I purposely parked the truck where you’d find it. I led those who were after you away so you could escape.”
“What?” G.O asked. Joon and Cheondoong were speechless at Leeteuk’s confession. “You knew…?”
“Yes, I knew. I knew everything and I decided that I’d help you out.”
“But why’s you do it?”
“To make sure that Doojoon would be happy. He deserved it and I wasn’t going to let Commander Yoon stand in his way. He had found his soul mate.” He looked up at Joon and the other two. “Do you know how rare it is for one person to find their soul mate? And all of you found yours.”
“We did, didn’t we?” Joon smiled, looking over at Cheondoong. The younger man smiled back before taking hold of Joon’s hand.
“As rare as finding your soul mate is, you all created a community where you can live with your soul mate peacefully. Do you realize how great that is?”
“It’s a very great thing,” Siwon answered, coming out of Seungho’s office. He was helping Seungho walk. “I need to take him to the clinic. He’s emotionally unstable as of right now and it’ll be easier to monitor him.”
They helped Siwon get Seungho outside and into the car. G.O climbed into the backseat beside him and closed the door. Siwon waved before climbing behind the wheel and driving off.
“I’m sorry for startling your friend. And I’m sorry for not telling you about this sooner.”
“It’s alright, Leeteuk. We understand why you didn’t.”
Leeteuk smiled sadly before walking to his and Kangin’s car.
“Hey, are you really going to endure the same sentence as him?” Cheondoong asked.
The eldest looked over his shoulder at them. “I’ll endure it because I love that idiot. When you love someone, you only have two options. You either learn to let them go or you-”
“-stand beside them, no matter what they’ve done,” Joon finished.
“And I just can’t let him go. I’ve tried to for the seven years that I’ve known him and it’s just impossible. I can’t breathe without him by my side.”
“What if Seungho decides on the death penalty?”
“Then I’ll die with Kangin.”
“You say it as if it’s a simple choice.”
Leeteuk laughed. “Whenever love is involved, it’s never simple. But as I just said, I can’t breathe without him by my side.”
