Chapter One:
It’s been a little over a year, but that doesn’t stop the nightmares from occurring. Almost every night, Hyunseung would wake up drenched in a cold sweat. In his dream, he sees and fights against Commander Yoon, his ex-sergeant’s father. He’d always wake up after the gunfire. This night was no different.
Hyunseung sat at the kitchen table, a cup of coffee steaming in front of him. His fiancé, Jiyong, had gotten used to it. Some nights Jiyong would even accompany him to the kitchen for a cup of the warm liquid, but he hadn’t this night. Hyunseung stared into the cup, seeing himself staring back. He could never understand why some things, like coffee or mud puddles, reflected images back.
“You’re going to keep losing weight if you don’t sleep properly,” Jiyong yawned, coming into the kitchen. He blinked rapidly, trying to adjust his eyes to the sudden light.
“I can’t help it, Jiyong. It happens every night, but I can’t just roll over and go back to sleep,” Hyunseung replied. He patted the chair next to him, motioning for Jiyong to sit with him.
The blond haired man obliged, sitting next to Hyunseung and leaning his head down onto the cool surface of the table. “How can you stay awake all night and function during the day?” Another yawn escaped Jiyong’s lips.
Hyunseung shrugged, running his hand through Jiyong’s hair. “I don’t know. Maybe my body is used to the lack of sleep by now. This has been happening since then…”
He looked up at Hyunseung through his hair, reaching up with his hand to grab the other’s. He pressed a kiss to Hyunseung’s wrist and sighed. “Let’s go back to bed.”
“Alright.”
Jiyong could sense the reluctance hidden so well in Hyunseung’s voice. “I’ll be with you the entire night, so don’t worry.”
The two rose from their spots at the table and left the kitchen, the cup of coffee untouched and forgotten. Once in the bedroom, Jiyong left Hyunseung at the door and went to the bed. He fluffed the pillows and positioned them all toward the center of the double bed. He climbed onto it and leaned against the center of the pillows, a smile tugging at his lips.
Hyunseung frowned. “Where am I supposed to sleep?”
“Right here,” Jiyong murmured, opening his arms. He smiled at the blush on Hyunseung’s face. When the other joined him on the bed, he wrapped his arms protectively around him and kissed him sweetly. “Sweet dreams, my Seungie.”
Hyunseung pulled the thick comforter up around them and stretched his neck to peck Jiyong quickly on the lips. “You, too, honey.” He nestled closer to Jiyong, resting his ear over the blond’s heart. Listening to its soothing, rhythmic beating, he was finally able to fall asleep peacefully.
When the sun rose, Hyunseung and Jiyong went to meet some friends at the new café that had opened up. The owner, Kyuhyun, had just moved there with his husband Sungmin.
“Welcome!” Kyuhyun greeted them happily. He smiled.
“Hi!” Yoseob replied, smiling back. “I’m Yang Yoseob.”
“Cho Kyuhyun.”
“This is my boyfriend Kikwang and our friends.”
“Nice to meet you. Is there anything in particular you’d like to try today?”
“Do you have strawberry pancakes?” Kikwang asked. When Kyuhyun smiled and nodded Kikwang ordered him and Yoseob a big helping to share.
“I’d just like some coffee, please,” Hyunseung requested. Jiyong ordered a large portion scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to eat it all, but he could get Hyunseung to eat at least a little bit of it.
“I’ll just have some regular pancakes, please,” Junhyung said.
“Okay. Why don’t you guys have a seat and I’ll bring your food out to you.”
“Thanks.”
They all sat down at the same table and began talking about random things. Hyunseung straightened the engagement ring on his finger, which brought up the topic of weddings.
“Who’re you going to let be the best man?” Kikwang asked, sitting next to Yoseob. He took the blond’s hand in his.
“Don’t you mean the Maid of Honor?” Yoseob laughed. Kikwang shortly laughed with him until he saw the look on Hyunseung’s face.
“Watch it, Banana Head, or you’ll be wearing a dress!” Hyunseung hissed, pointing his finger at him. The laughing ceased. “That’s what I thought.”
Jiyong chuckled, running his fingers over Hyunseung’s palm. “They still see you as scary,” he joked, a smile on his face.
“I’m not scary!” He looked at Junhyung, eyes pleading. “Am I scary, Junnie?”
“When you’re talking about your wedding you are,” Junhyung replied. “And don’t call me Junnie. That’s reserved for Doojoon.”
Kyuhyun waltzed over and set their food down in front of them.
“Speaking of Doojoon, where is he?” Everyone looked at him intently after Kikwang had asked the question. “Aren’t the two of you newlyweds? Why is he not here?”
“He had to go into the city for something. He said it was a surprise.”
“Maybe he’s leaving you for someone else…” At Yoseob’s words, Junhyung frowned, his eyes dropping to the table.
His fingers immediately traced over the wedding ring on his left hand. “He wouldn’t do that. He promised me a year ago that I was meant for him. He wouldn’t lie to me, Yoseob.”
“I don’t mean to butt in,” Kyuhyun began. They looked at him. “But every time Sungmin says he has a surprise for me, it always turns out great.” He smiled at Junhyung and patted his shoulder. “Try to cheer up.” Junhyung was smiling as Kyuhyun walked away to wait on other customers.
“He really made you happy,” Jiyong pointed out. He rested his chin on Hyunseung’s shoulder. Automatically, Hyunseung turned his head and gave him a peck on the cheek.
“He made me curious as to what Doojoon might be getting me.” His phone buzzed in his pocket. Barely glancing at the number, he answered it. “Hi, Yoonie!” After a slight pause, a smile spread across his face. “You’re on your way home? Should I wait for you there? Okay. I love you!” He hurried gulped down his pancakes and stood up. “I have to go. Doojoon’s going to be home in ten minutes.” He rushed out of the café and climbed into his car.
“He was happy. I’ll have to call him later to see what happened,” Kikwang said. “Let’s make a bet on what the surprise is!”
“What does Junhyung want the most right now?” Hyunseung asked.
“A puppy!” Yoseob blurted.
“That’s what you want, Banana Head.”
“Kids?” Jiyong guessed.
“We’ll bet on kids and you’ll bet on…?”
“A puppy!” Kikwang and Yoseob chimed happily. Hyunseung rolled his eyes.
“Alright. Whoever loses has to…”
“Buy supper for a month for the other couple. Thirty dollars is the limit.”
“Deal.” The two couples shook hands, sealing the bet. “Now, we wait. However hears from Junhyung first will tell the others.” After finishing the meal, they paid, and left. In the parking lot, the two couples went their separate ways.
“Want to swing by the church to see how things are going?” Jiyong asked, fastening the helmet onto Hyunseung.
“No, I’d rather not. Although I’m excited, I’m too nervous. In just a week we’ll be married,” Hyunseung replied. He sat behind Jiyong on the motorcycle, wrapping his arms securely around his waist.
“Want to stop by Daesung and Seungri’s then?”
“I haven’t seen them for a few days. Let’s go.”
They pulled out of the parking lot and headed for Jiyong’s friends’ house. They would be attending the wedding along with Taeyang and T.O.P. When they arrived, Seungri was on the front porch. He waved to them before opening the front door.
“Daesung, Jiyong and Hyunseung are here!” he hollered into the house. Water was shut off and Daesung walked out, drying his hands on the apron tied around his waist.
“Jiyong, Hyunseung!” Daesung greeted them happily. “I can’t wait for your wedding next week!” He nearly jumped off the porch to hug them.
“Thanks, Daesung,” Hyunseung replied. “When do you and Seungri plan on getting married?” He went up the front stairs and hugged Seungri.
“A few months from now. We haven’t decided on a date yet.”
Hyunseung’s phone rang, the ringtone signaling that it was Junhyung. He smiled as he answered it. “Hi, Junhyung. So what was the big surprise Doojoon had for you?”
“He adopted kids for us!” Junhyung squealed. From where Jiyong was standing, he could hear Junhyung’s loud voice. “He adopted kids for us!”
Hyunseung’s jaw dropped. “He got you kids? How many?”
“Two! A little boy and a little girl! Oh, Hyunseung, I’m so happy! When they got out of the car, I could only stare at them.”
“That’s amazing, Junhyung! What are their names?”
“We decided to call the girl Jinkyong and the boy Yongsook.”
“I’m jealous, Junhyung! I can’t wait to meet them!”
“Do you mind if they come to the wedding? I know it’s unexpected, but they’re really sweet and adorable.”
“We don’t mind at all, Junhyung. We’ll try to stop by on our way home to meet them. Talk to you later.” After hanging up, Hyunseung turned to Jiyong. “Doojoon adopted two kids for Junhyung and him to raise!”
Jiyong smiled. “That’s great! When do we get to meet them?”
“Today, hopefully. And guess what else?”
“What?”
“Kikwang and Yoseob owe us supper for a month! They lost the bet!”
While Jiyong and Hyunseung were happily jumping around at their victory, a car pulled into the driveway. Taeyang and T.O.P climbed out, both smiling at their friends’ actions.
“Are you that happy to see us?” T.O.P joked. Jiyong and Hyunseung stopped jumping around and greeted their friends.
“We won a bet against Kikwang and Yoseob and now they owe us supper for a month!”
“And Doojoon adopted two kids for him and Junhyung to raise.”
“What? Really?” Taeyang asked. He looked at T.O.P then back to Jiyong. “They’re parents now?”
“We’ll have to call them later to congratulate them. Right now, I’m more concerned about eating the lunch that Seungri and Daesung cooked.” T.O.P grabbed Taeyang’s hand and pulled him up the stairs and into the house. Daesung followed them.
“We’ll call you later,” Seungri said, waving goodbye to them as he went inside.
“Let’s head to the Yoon residence and meet their kids.”
Hyunseung kissed Jiyong quickly before putting the helmet back on. “Alright.” He sighed happily. “I can’t wait until we’re married. They seem so happy.”
They climbed on the bike and sped away in the direction of Doojoon and Junhyung’s house. When they got their, cars were parked in their driveway and along the street.
“Are you having a party?” Hyunseung called, pulling the helmet off.
“Seems like it!” Doojoon responded. He was holding Jinkyong and showing her off to Mir and Dongwoon. Junhyung was chasing Yongsook through the yard. The little boy’s laughter filled the air. G.O and Seungho were standing on the porch talking with Joon and Cheondoong about who knows what. Hyunseung couldn’t help but smile at their happy little community that they worked so hard to create.
Everything was perfect…
