 Chapter Thirteen:
“It’s almost nightfall,” Nickhun whispered.
“We’ll execute the plan as soon as the sun drops below the horizon. We need to make sure they’re in position,” Taecyeon explained. He pulled out his phone, going to the text menu and sending one to Changmin. The reply came quickly. “Alright, guys, they’re near the holding cells.”
“How do you know it’s the holding cells that those four guys are being held in?” Wooyoung asked. He was crouched down by the bushes where they’d execute their diversion.
“I know because I’ve been there before.”
“You’ve been there before?” Junho and Chansung questioned together. “When?”
“When I first got here, I wasn’t exactly how I am now.” Taecyeon’s eyes seemed to glaze over, memories of the experience flooding back. “I was rebellious, loud. A troublemaker. I was assigned to help out a Commander of this military, but I refused.”
“Who were you supposed to help out?”
Smiling wryly, Taecyeon looked at his friends. “Commander Kim Taegoon.”
“C-Commander Kim Taegoon…? Isn’t he dead or something now?”
Taecyeon laughed. “He got wounded on the mission I was forced to go on with him. He’s been in intensive care for three years.”
“Wait, isn’t he Junsu’s brother or something?”
He nodded. “Taegoon’s dad adopted Junsu. On that mission, he told me to look after Junsu.”
“Is that why you’re always looking after hyung? It’s because his brother told you to?”
“Part of it is. The other part is because I like him…”
“Yah! It’s time!” Changmin’s voice interrupted on the walkie-talkie. They ended the conversation and started their plan. “We’ll wait for the flare.”
“Roger that.”
The members of 2PM moved out, heading toward the opposite side of the base. Once there, they turned on each other.
“Ow, hyung! You aren’t supposed to actually hit us!” Wooyoung complained. He rubbed his arm where a bruise was starting. After about ten minutes, Taecyeon froze, his fist pulled back ready to hit Nickhun.
“Yah, why’d you stop?” he hissed in a low voice. He followed the younger’s eyes, gasping at seeing Jaebeom standing there with Henry and Zhoumi. “Jaebeom hyung…”
“Well, if it isn’t the traitors,” Jaebeom said. His voice was colder than normal. “Get over here, Taecyeon.”
“Don’t do it!” someone yelled. Everyone looked toward the speaker, Taecyeon’s eyes widening once recognition hit.
“T-Taegoon…”
“Don’t give them any ground, Taecyeon! I won’t forgive you if you let them win!”
“How the hell are you alive?” Zhoumi spat, staring over at him. “Three years ago, we were ordered to get rid of you! How are you still here?!”
“You’re the ones who hurt him…?” Taecyeon stared at Zhoumi. “It was your fault this whole time? You’re the one who hurt Taegoon hyung?”
“I sent him to kill him, but he failed. He was only able to wound him since you were there. You took him away after he was shot.”
“I can’t believe it. How did I not remember that you’re the ones who caused this?!” Taecyeon wasn’t able to control the volume of his voice. It only got louder. “You’re the reason why hyung was always suffering! You’re the reason and I didn’t even remember your face?”
“You weren’t meant to see it, so you probably never knew it. Now, he can finish his job.” Jaebeom nodded toward Taegoon. “Zhoumi, finish him off.”
Zhoumi smirked, aiming his pistol at Taegoon. He knew the other wouldn’t be able to move in time. A shot rang out, making time seem like it stopped. Taegoon grabbed his side, wondering why Zhoumi had missed hitting him dead on. He looked over and saw the reason why.
“What are you doing, you idiots?!” he shouted. He didn’t recognize the new group that had appeared, but he knew they were there to help Taecyeon, so he’d trust them.
“We’re helping!” Jonghun grunted, trying to wrestle the pistol from Zhoumi. “Yah, hyung! Make sure he’s not too badly wounded!”
“Got it!” Hongki shouted, racing toward Taegoon. He noticed the blood before he got there, already pulling off his jacket to help slow the flow of blood. “Are you okay?” He put pressure on Taegoon’s side, feeling the elder’s blood slowly seep into the cloth.
“I’ll be fine. Who are you?”
“They’re friends.” Taecyeon’s voice so close made them jump. They looked over as he came closer. “Hongki, go help the Treasures. I’ll stay here will Taegoon hyung.”
“Alright. If you need me, just hol-”
A gunshot drowned out the end of his sentence. He turned around in time to see Jaejin fall to his knees, holding his stomach. His eyes widened when he saw the gooey red liquid staining the younger’s shirt. When he coughed, blood spewed out. Without thinking, Hongki started running toward him.
“Jaejin!” As he reached the younger, his heart nearly stopped. He dropped to his knees. “Jaejin.” When the younger didn’t respond, he started worrying. “Jaejin, answer me. Please, Jaejin, you have to answer me.”
“Get them out of here!” Junho hit a button on his belt, sending a flare up into the sky. He knew that Changmin and the others were already inside the holding cells before the flare went off. They had obtained the attention of the entire base just by this fight alone. The gunshots were more of a signal to go.
“Yah! Get on!” Changmin ordered, the truck he drove skidding to a halt between them. Taecyeon helped Taegoon on while Hongki carried Jaejin. The others boarded, hitting the side to tell him to go. As Changmin drove off, Taecyeon looked back, seeing hatred in Jaebeom’s eyes. He didn’t dare to glance at Zhoumi or Henry, fearing they’d know that the four had been rescued. In the pit of his stomach, he acknowledged that they already knew.

“It’s been forever,” Yoseob groaned. He was sprawled out on the ground, staring at the stars appearing in the night sky.
“I wonder how Mir was all day…” Dongwoon murmured, hanging upside-down from a tree branch.
“Get down, Dongwoon,” Hyunseung said, poking him in the forehead. “All of the blood is going to rush to your head…”
“Or he’s going to fall,” Doojoon added.
“That might be worth watching,” Kikwang stated. He laughed as Dongwoon’s expression turned from nothing to nauseated.
“I think I’m going to hurl…”
“Then get down, stupid.”
“Yah!” Junhyung hollered at them. “Am I the only one who is actually on duty? Get back to your posts, slackers.” He turned his gaze toward the exit, a grin spreading across his face. “Yah! They’re back!” He stood, brushing himself off.
Doojoon and Kikwang helped Dongwoon out of the tree, him nearly losing his balance. Yoseob hurried over to the side of the road, smiling automatically. When the truck stopped right by them, they all frowned.
“Yah, call Siwon!” Seulong ordered. “Two are wounded. We can’t move them anymore. It’ll only do more damage.”
Kikwang called Siwon. “Yah, get to the west entrance, now! We need medical assistance!” He interrupted the elder. “We can’t move them! The damage is bad! Get over here!”
“Jaejin, you have to hold on,” Hongki whispered, pressing his lips to the younger’s forehead. “You can’t leave us. You aren’t allowed to join Wonbin yet! You hear me?!” Tears fell from his eyes, his voice climbing in octaves as he neared hysteria. “You can’t see him without the rest of us! After he died, we promised we’d leaved this world together! Don’t you dare die yet, Jaejin…”
“Yah, he’ll be fine, Hongki,” Minhwan reassured him.
“You don’t know that, Minhwan. He might die…” He closed his eyes, his tears falling onto Jaejin’s forehead. “You aren’t allowed to die…”
Siwon’s car screeched to a halt beside them, nearly bumping into the truck. He jumped out with Yesung, hurrying over to the back of the truck.
“If you aren’t wounded, get out of the truck,” Siwon instructed.
“I’m not leav-” Hongki started.
“Now!” Yesung ordered. He pried Hongki’s hands off of Jaejin, shoving him out of the back of the truck. Not willing to be shoved like their hyung, the Ft boys climbed out with those of One Day.
“Tend to him first,” Taegoon said. “He’s more hurt than I am.”
“What happened?” Doojoon demanded of Changmin once he climbed out of the cab of the truck.
“We ran into Jaebeom, Henry, and Zhoumi. Zhoumi shot at Taegoon, Jonghun tried to get the gun from him…” He looked at Jonghun, who was trying to get Hongki to calm down. “I don’t know who shot Jaejin, but it really did some damage. He was almost unconscious when we left…”
“I’ll need to take him to the clinic. I don’t have the right tools for this.” Siwon looked over at Yesung, who nodded before climbing out of the back.
“Yah, get the ambulance over here.” He waited for the other to speak. “We don’t have time for it, Seungho. One of them is wounded badly and needs to be taken to the clinic.” Yesung disconnected the call. “Seungho’s on his way over with Joon and the ambulance. They’ll be here within a few minutes.”
“Thanks, Yesung.” The elder pouted at the mention of his name. He knew it was serious if Siwon refused to speak one of the many pet names he concocted for his husband. Seven minutes later, Seungho pulled up with the ambulance. “Help me get him onto a stretcher and into the ambulance.”
“I got it,” Joon offered, opening the back of the rescue vehicle. He maneuvered the stretcher to the back of the truck. After helping Siwon load Jaejin onto it, he offered his hand to Taegoon. “You come, too. You need to be helped as well.”
“Thanks.” Taegoon accepted his help as he climbed out of the back of the truck and into the ambulance. Siwon climbed into the back.
“Joon, you drive. Seungho, take Yesung back to the house.”
“I want to go to the clinic with you, Siwon. I want to help.”
He looked at the elder. “Yesung, I may have to perform surgery. If that’s the case, it’s best for you to not be at the clinic.”
Hongki’s brain processed the word over Jonghun and the other Treasures talking. “Surgery?” he asked. His throat felt like sandpaper. “Jaejin might need surgery?”
“Step on it, Joon.” The ambulance doors closed as Joon climbed in behind the wheel and sped off toward Siwon’s clinic.
“Let’s get you guys home,” Yoseob said. They walked the One Day boys and FT boys back to their home. “Call if you need anything.”
After they left, Hongki went upstairs and shut himself in the bathroom. A few hours later, Jonghun pounded on the door.
“Yah, hyung! We all need in there sometime tonight. We need to shower.” No response. “Hyung?” Jonghun opened the door, seeing the elder curled into a ball, tears running down his cheeks. “Hyung, are you okay?”
“He can’t die…” Hongki whispered. He peered up at the younger, tears still pouring from his eyes. “I can’t lose him, Jonghun. I can’t lose Jaejin…” He shook his head as he hiccupped.
“Yah, Hongki,” Changmin said, entering the bathroom. He sat down beside the younger and sighed. Without warning, Hongki leaned over, covering his face with his hands. The elder was shocked into silence at the action, unsure of what to do.
“I can’t lose him…”
Wrapping his arms hesitantly around the younger, Changmin tried to sooth him. “Why can’t you lose him?” When he got no answer, he glanced down, noticing that Hongki had fallen asleep. “Yah, why is this so difficult?”
“Hongki hyung never speaks about his feelings,” Seunghyun explained. He frowned at his hyung. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him cry like this…”
“When Hongki hyung bawls, you know it’s serious,” Minhwan added. “I’ll phone the clinic later and see how Jaejin is doing.”
They moved out of the way when Changmin picked up Hongki and took him out of the bathroom. He carried the younger to one of the rooms. Placing him on the bed, he turned to leave. Hongki reached out and grabbed his wrist, halting his exit.
“I’m in love with him…”
“What?”
“I’m in love with Jaejin.”
