There's been a length of brick wall hard against the house, between us and the nice people next door since, er, forever. Since they've had damp problems in that area, they wanted it hauled away and replaced with something that doesn't butt against the building. That's the thing about owning an older house that you know has never been loved, or even adequately maintained. When this stuff happens, nobody is surprised or upset.

I'm allowed to laugh all I like, because in two weeks my kitchen is coming out and it'll be me finding out how much worse everything actually is than I think it is.

Yep. Went round to see, er, Ant, for an apologise last night an he seemed happy enough that they'd found the smoking gun, as it were. Had a brief chat with the builders this AM and they were 'Pfft. Whatevs.' about it. Admittedly I had just said that I'd cover whatever extra needed doing...
