Uncharacteristic dithering / a middle-aged bloke bangs on about old cars

Aug 11, 2012 19:32

I think it's an obvious thing to say/think/type, but no-one buys two-litre cars any more. There's no point when a modern engine around the one-litre mark has been made to punt out the same or more power on less fuel, taking up less space and using less metal. In fact, it's a fascinating time for engine technology - supercharged three-pots with soft ( Read more... )

It's getting to the stage where mine is the only one in the queue for the lights still idling.

Mind, there are a few noddy-cars hereabouts that make a really loud 'PHHSST!' noise when clattering off. What gives the game away is that the alleged wastegate noise is the same each time.

My Sierra Tickford had a twin choke which was utterly bonkers, especially in Winter. I don't miss it at all.

Have to say the red (blown 2l) 9-5 estate ramtops accidentally bought is quite fun, even if it is a slushbox.

Still liked the old 900 better to drive though. Better sense of connection to the interface between front tyres and tarmac than pretty much anything I can remember driving.

Yep. Justyn was going on about his 9-5 this arvo when he brought the blue one back.

I'm old fashioned. I have a 2l turbo diesel, and will replace it in a couple of years with another one. I prefer something that has a certain level of meatiness, rather than something with a quorn engine.

Manual is a non-choice for me. I'm an absolute menace in an automatic - it's not driving, it's a toy.

My dad had a too-powerful Pontiac LeMans when I first learned to drive that required one foot and one finger. How I didn't get killed/ lose my licence driving that thing, I have no idea.

I dig autos for more or less the same reasons.

Talking about old v new small cars - there was an absolutely immaculate bright yellow Mini Clubman parked up in the village yesterday with a new BMW Mini in front of it. The fakey Mini was absolutely chuffing massive in comparison.

It's a nice enough car, but they really shouldn't have called it a Mini.
