Dear CSI: Franchise, I suspect you're only following demographic trends, but a differently-mutilated female corpse Every Damn Programme isn't actually televisual 'entertainment'. Or perhaps it is? Not my idea of a diversion, anyway ( Read more... )

I suppose CSI's only redeeming trait is that it may discourage particularly dumb criminals by convincing them that the cops are so intelligent, and have access to such amazingly advanced technology, that they can solve even the most complex crime in a single shift.

Apparently what it has actually done is encourage criminals to be more careful about not leaving fingerprints or blood evidence, and encourage juries to insist on magic instant failsafe evidence of the sort that doesn't actually exist.

I do even less Twitter than I do TV - what's the dirt on Curtis?

It seems the twitter-backlash of last night is having a backlash of its own. Excellent.

The original mithering appeared to be a set of people over-invested in being on Twitter because Twitter made the revolutions happen and therefore they're Doing Something by banging on about stuff like #stokescroft and pressing the 'like' button on the 'free Ai Weiwei' FB group. Yer man explaining exactly how much of a waste of time that was didn't go down well.

Chaps with tanks have a better chance of being in charge than chaps with blogs, by and large.

I love Adam Curtis for exactly this reason... I find myself agreeing with him 80% of the time, and politely attacked - with good reason - the remaining 20%.

See (or rather, hear) the linked MP3. Well worth the time.

Your update suggests you have watched more than one episode of each programme.... S&M or dirty little secret ;)

:p

Call it cumulative exposure. I'm nowhere near bright enough to spot that sort of underlying narrative without watching several examples first.

I suppose repeated watching of all of the above is what made me notice in the pilot episode of the new Hawaii 5-0 that it is blatant propaganda to keep Americans Scared of Terrorists in the same way as NCIS and 24.
