Myths of the recent past: US customer service.

Nov 07, 2010 20:56

Car rental in the US: quoted cost - $175. Actual cost - $400.

Van rental in the UK: quoted cost- £400. Actual cost - £400.

(I haven't rented a car in this country for about a decade, but I am tolerably sure that the cost doesn't more than double.)

hopeless shower of bastards, oh ffs, well imagine my surprise

That non-chain place in Southmead used to be good.

Could you do it on a Transit pickup? Slip Helen's Andy some dosh, I doubt he's too busy this time of year.

Yeah, when given a quote I mentally double it, and that's usually about right. Except that the last two times we booked & pre-paid through third-party clearing houses and didn't get hit by any extras. When we returned the car in Florida (it was ridiculously cheap) I was stunned that we didn't get any surcharges.

This time round I forgot to take tax for the one-way drop-off fee into consideration so there was a bit of a surprise, but that was my own fault.

See, in this country there's a legal difference between a quote and an estimate.

One more reason for me to escape here and move there!

Except the smart countries aren't taking us.

On my last few rentals, I've found the price is as quoted but the car has been bigger. Nice one.
