I've always thought the key starting point was to be able to write fiction. I'm great at imagining future-tech or future-politics scenarios, but dreadful at imagining any kind of storyline for them. Hence I tend to write pretty good roleplaying game scenarios, but gave three times given up writing fiction since my characters become Janet and John after only half a page. Writing fiction involves writing about people, and I don't do people all that well.
