The bloggers aren't always the problem (Guido has been known to be vaguely entertaining), but the Speak Your Branes commenters are utterly frightening.

Well, yes. It seems to be in the nature of the way we've learned to react to news sources, and also they way that no-one save LJ and Making Light bother with comment-pruning to keep the SYB types in line.

I'd suggest that it's the combination of the two:

1) Crappy politicians feed chatter about how crap politicians are.
a) Constant chatter about how crap politicians are does two things:
z) Discourages righteous chaps from getting in the game 'cos they don't want to be abused all the time.
x) Encourages righteous chaps who are in the game to think along the lines of 'If I'm going to get pilloried for being a fucking cunt regardless of what I do, I might as well get my dick wet'.

There will always be some people who get into politics because they want the power and there will always be some people who want to think the worst of others. It's the ratio's that count.

One of the bits of wisdom I garnered during my market trader days was, try to read the newspaper(s) with political view most opposed to your own every once in a while - an occasional laugh and an occasional wake up call.

Frankly, when you've been to Whitley Bay, nothing shocks you anymore.
