I haven't read this book yet but I'm very familiar with Homes. She writes funny but acerbic stuff. Her short fiction is better than most of her novels, in my opinion. Her novels seem almost mean-spirited in the blackness of the black comedy (I'm thinking particularly of Music for Torching, which was about characters the author herself didn't seem to have much compassion or empathy for

As usual, I agree with you on all counts. What collection is "A Real Doll" in? I've only read her collection Things You Should Know in terms of her short stories.
i like it! i work in the marketing department and am (together with others) in charge of the book covers. i think the payment is alright, but i suspect i'm fairly modest in this respect anyway ...
