Yamada Taro’s Cheapest Curry Bread: Part 4 C
It wasn’t long after that the doctor came to tell the Yamada family that everything had gone smoothly in the operation, besides Taro unknowingly trying to charm the nurses into giving birth for him.
Taro was still waking up in the recovery room, but the doctor allowed the Yamada’s in since Taro was alone.
"Yamada-san... what about Yano-san?" Mimura asked as the two hung back in the hall. Kazuo smiled and allowed Mimura to enter the room.
"I’ll find him." he said with a nod and then went to find the stairs that Kenta had left through.
Kenta was sitting on the curb outside the stairwell, staring intensely at the fluffy clouds that he couldn’t deny would go perfectly in the baby’s room. He looked at the cigarette he had smoked far too fast and dropped it onto the concrete, snuffing it out with his boot. Kenta slowly stood up, getting ready to go back inside and apologize for his behaviour.
He heard the door open next to him and spotted Kazuo walk out confidentially, smiling at Kenta’s suddenly cautious expression.
"I’m sorry... Yamada-san..." Kenta said as clearly as he could, bowing his head low.
Kazuo smiled at Kenta and crossed his arms.
"It’s okay, Kenta-kun. We know you’re nervous... how do you think I felt? I have seven children, Kenta-kun." Kazuo laughed.
"When Ayako-chan told me we were expecting Taro-kun, we were very young... Being still a kid in my mind, you know what I did?" Kazuo asked in a strangely cheery voice. Kenta shook his head slowly.
"I ran. Faraway. But... I came back! Because Ayako-chan needed me." Kazuo said happily with a nod. Kenta looked at Kazuo and took a deep, quiet breath after a long moment.
"I never intended to leave." he said firmly. Taro’s father studied the boy in front of him, his stern eyes holding an obvious truth. He smiled brightly and wrapped an arm around Kenta’s shoulders.
"I believe I saw your sister arrive when I came down here. Shall we go greet her? Taro-kun is probably waiting for you." Kazuo asked, reaching behind him to open the door. Kenta swallowed his nervousness and walked numbly back into the building.
"What do you mean he ran off!?" Sakura exclaimed, looking frantically around at the others. Taro, who was still a bit drowsy, stared down at his hands in his lap.
"Kazuo went to find him, I’m sure he’ll be okay." Taro’s mother assured Sakura with a positive grin. Mimura glanced at Taro’s uncharacteristic blank stare and walked slowly over to his side, softly patting his arm.
"Everything’s okay, Yamada-kun. Your mother and I just got back from the nursery and they’re both healthy... the nurses are just checking them before bringing them here." Mimura explained quietly. Taro’s lips curved up slightly and he looked over at Mimura.
"That’s great news, Mimura-kun..." Taro said sleepily. Mimura looked over his shoulder anxiously, wishing Kenta would appear in the door.
"I should have seen this coming, right? The way he acted before... when we met... Kenta-kun isn’t ready for this." Taro said softly, not really caring who heard it.
Mimura had half a thought to lean over and kiss Taro’s defeated smile, but as he thought about it, he heard Sakura out in the hall.
"Kenta! What were you thinking!?"
Taro instantly perked up at Kenta’s grumble of an apology, and Mimura knew it was time to leave the two alone. Just as Mimura stood up from the bed, Kenta came into the room and paused, looking from Taro to Mimura.
"I was just leaving..." Mimura excused himself and left the room, closing the door behind him. Kenta shifted uncomfortably and Taro played with his fingers nervously.
"At... at least you came back." Taro said quietly, smiling at Kenta.
Kenta spotted the well-hidden sadness in his eyes and took a small step forward.
"Why did everyone think I was going to leave?" Kenta grumbled, walking swiftly to the chair beside Taro’s bed. Taro watched him rubbing his temples softly and slowly leaned back into the pillows.
"I won’t stop you, Kenta-kun. It is a bit overwhelming... I don’t mind." Taro almost whispered, keeping his eyes on Kenta, who quickly looked up at Taro.
"Idiot..."
"...eh?"
Kenta jumped up from his chair angrily, Taro wincing slightly when he sat up startled. Pacing the room, Kenta loudly gathered his thoughts with huffs and tsks. Then, he paused and looked straight at the wide-eyed Taro.
He moved gracefully to the bedside, placing one hand on the other side of Taro’s body and the other lacing his fingers through Taro’s.
Looking up at Kenta, Taro could nearly see his reflection in Kenta’s dark and serious eyes. He quickly dropped his own eyes down, avoiding the gaze that made him flush.
"I’m not leaving." Kenta whispered, taking his hand from Taro’s and gently tilting the younger’s chin up to touch their lips together softly. It was a short, gentle kiss and one that didn’t feel like it belonged to Kenta at all.
Taro tucked his face into Kenta’s neck as the innocent kiss ended and wrapped his arms around his shoulders.
"Are you okay now?" Kenta asked Taro after a few moments, pulling back slightly to see his face. Taro nodded and laughed tearfully, wiping his face with his hand. Kenta smirked and ruffled Taro’s hair lovingly before leaning in and kissing his forehead.
"Thank you, Kenta..." Taro muttered before finally breaking down into tears and being held tightly by a smiling Kenta.
"Ah! Look! How cute!"
"Their fingers are so small!"
"This one has Kenta-niichan’s nose!"
Kenta sat on the edge of the bed, watching the flock of Yamada’s, Sakura and the Ikegami’s fawn over the newly arrived twins who were wrapped carefully in Taro’s arms.
Mimura stood off to the side of Kenta, watching with a small smile as Taro handed one baby off to his mother.
"...congratulations, Yano-san." he suddenly said, catching Kenta’s attention. Kenta smirked and nodded in thanks before he felt a soft tug on his jacket.
Taro was grinning ear to ear, his eyes still misty from his latest crying session when the babies were brought in.
"Kenta-kun! You haven’t held them yet!" Taro said cheerfully.
"I’ll wait..." Kenta replied nervously, glancing at everyone in the room. Mimura smirked and stood up, walking to Ayako and gently taking the baby girl from her arms. Kenta stood up quickly, meeting Mimura, who moved close to Kenta and smiled.
"You won’t drop them." Mimura said kindly. Kenta looked wearily to Taro, smiling brightly from his place on the bed and urging Kenta on with his sparkling eyes.
Swallowing a few times, Kenta slowly held out his arms and took a deep breath when Mimura placed the baby in his arms.
"So warm..." Kenta mumbled, scrunching his nose as he cautiously adjusted his hold. Falling down onto the bed next to Taro’s side, Kenta moved the blanket from the baby’s face, studying her sleeping face and pouting lips.
Taro leaned on Kenta’s shoulder and softly poked at the lips.
"Tama-chan~" Taro said softly, looking at Kenta for approval of the name. Kenta nodded and smirked at the tiny frown that crossed the baby’s face before quickly vanishing.
The little girl hadn’t even smiled and Kenta already knew she would be able to get anything she wanted from him.
"Kenta-kun can name the boy, okay?" Taro said, reaching up for the other baby from his mother, and gently placing him in Kenta’s arms next to Tama-chan. Taro watched Kenta’s face closely, smiling even more when Kenta looked like he was about to cry.
The little boy had the nose of Kenta and the kittenish smile of Taro and at that moment, Kenta knew that his children would be breaking hearts and being spoiled rotten whenever they smiled or laughed or even cried.
Taro suddenly heard Kenta sniff and drop his head low so no one could see his face.
"You don’t have to think of a name right now! Don’t cry Kenta!" Taro said loudly, wrapping his arms around Kenta.
"I’m not crying!" this argument, however, was put to rest when Kenta’s tears rolled freely down his cheeks.
Six months passed with a blink of an eye, and Kenta and Taro finally had a set routine in their new life. It had taken a very frustrated Kenta nearly a week to think up a name for his son, but finally just decided to squish his and Taro’s names together, resulting in Kentaro.
Tama and Kentaro were polar opposites from the beginning, making it even harder on their inexperienced and easily panicked parents. While Kentaro was well behaved and listened easily, Tama was a hand full.
Taro let Kenta deal with her, since they both had the same stubborn and temperamental attitude.
But with the help of the Yamada’s and Sakura, the twins grew quickly and as expected, were spoiled by everyone. And even though Taro wasn’t too comfortable with it, he also had a tendency to sneak in extra sweets here and there, often getting caught by Kenta, who couldn’t resist the twin’s big brown eyes either.
While life with the babies went well, Kenta and Taro’s relationship had seen more than one bump in the road.
Dealing with fussy babies who wouldn’t sleep through the night for quite awhile, still going to university and dancing on a television show, both were exhausted and never had energy for anything else.
Of course, Taro’s mother and Sakura often took the babies so Kenta and Taro could be alone for a night, but it usually ended up as a quick makeout session and then falling asleep together on the couch.
But when Kenta and Taro did have energy for something, it couldn’t last as long as they’d like, due to Tama or Kentaro waking up and causing the two to lose their concentration.
Taro was the first to break under the pressure of having the new babies.
When he was fully healed from the operation, Taro returned to school, dropping the babies off in the morning at his mother’s home or at the Yano’s, depending on who would be home that day, and then went to school. Kenta was usually with him on the way to the TV station and often took the train with him.
But on the days where Kenta had extra filming, Taro found himself alone with the two babies, trying to figure out how to calm them. Trying his best and almost always succeeding, Taro was certain he could do it.
But on more than one occasion, Kenta came home to crying babies and a crying Taro, doing everything he could to lull them to sleep.
Kenta of course helped Taro and a couple hours later, the babies laid side by side, fast asleep. Taro, however, would cry even more, claiming he couldn’t do anything by himself and somehow blaming Kenta for it.
Kenta would then retaliate with harshly reminding Taro who was making the money and scolded him for not going to the Yamada’s or Sakura for help.
On those nights, Taro slept at his old house, while Kenta fumed alone with the slumbering babies. Every morning though, Kenta opened the door to Taro, apologizing for causing Kenta so much trouble.
Kenta could only smile and pull Taro inside, kissing a smile back onto his face.
Surprisingly, Kenta stayed level headed and calm when dealing with the babies alone. During shopping trips, Taro left Kenta with Tama and Kentaro. Kenta of course would try to get the twins to sleep as long as they could, but when they refused to sleep, Kenta turned to entertainment.
That day was not the first that Taro came home to Kenta breathlessly dancing and singing "Pa Pi Pu Pe Pon!" while the twins laughed shamelessly at their father.
But now as everything was smooth and days were filled with laughs instead of pointless arguments and frustrated tears, Kenta and Taro found themselves at the Yamada house for a regular dinner gathering. While the dinner was being prepared, Kenta observed Tama and Kentaro, playing with the Yamada kids.
"Everyone! Dinner is ready!" Taro announced, bringing over the food. While Taro and his father set the table, Kenta and Ayako rushed the kids to clean their hands, who all made a big water mess when they all tried to help Tama and Kentaro at the same time.
Kenta sat at the table with Kentaro in his lap, slowly feeding the baby and helping Taro next to him as he tried to calm a fussy Tama. Then, when Kenta sensed that the time was right and everyone was in smiles, he cleared his throat loudly, making the table go silent.
"Yamada-san," Kenta said, facing Taro’s suddenly confused parents and bowing his head slightly. "Please... allow me to marry Taro-kun."
The first thing that came to Taro’s mind was how Kenta had spoken so formally since he had never done it before. Taro’s mother and the Yamada kids gasped happily, but remained fixated on their father, waiting for his reaction.
"Yes." Kazuo answered simply, grinning widely at Kenta’s relieved and ecstatic expression. The Yamada kids shouted happily while Taro’s mother cried and Kazuo hugged her, but it all stopped when Taro shouted.
"Wait! Kenta..." Taro’s voice softened when Kenta faced him now. The two stared at each other, Taro growing tearful and Kenta’s eyes soft.
The only noise was the sounds of Tama and Kentaro, who were reaching across and grabbing at each other’s hands from their parent’s laps.
"Will you?" Kenta asked, drawing Taro closer to wipe the tears from his cheeks. Taro shut his eyes for a moment and then looked back up at Kenta and nodded.
"I will..." Taro replied through tears, smiling shyly. The Yamada kids and their parents cheered again at the news, watching Kenta lean over and landing a kiss on Taro’s forehead.
Taro laughed tearfully, hugging Kenta as best as he could without squishing the twins between them.
After the dinner was eaten and cleaned up, the kids were running around getting ready for bed and the twins were already asleep. Kenta took this time to grab Taro’s hand and pull him outside.
He took Taro further from the doors and faced him, watching the moonlight bounce off Taro’s smile and sparkling eyes.
"Were you serious, Kenta?" Taro asked almost hopefully. Kenta smiled and pulled one of his rings off, holding it out for Taro.
"We can’t really afford to do this properly..." Kenta said softly, watching Taro place the ring on his left ring finger. Kenta moved his remaining ring onto his own ring finger and then was suddenly hugged by Taro.
"I don’t care! This is so much better!" Taro cried, muffled in Kenta’s jacket. Kenta pulled back from Taro and kissed him softly, cupping his face to steadily deepen it.
"Tama-chan and Kentaro are fast asleep!" Taro whispered as he jumped onto the bed next to Kenta. Kenta smiled as he pulled off his shirt and studied Taro’s face as he daydreamed somewhere off in the bedroom.
"Mutsumi and Nanami still have their uniforms from Kindergarten... they said Tama-chan and Kentaro could have them." Taro smiled lazily, absentmindedly playing with the ring on his finger. Kenta crawled over to the other side of the bed and sat up in front of Taro.
"There’s still five years to go until that." Kenta said softly, leaning over and brushing Taro’s cheeks with his lips.
"Mmm, yeah. Which school do you think they should go to? Or maybe we can go and look? Do-"
"Taro-kun... I’m trying to do something here." Kenta said, pausing halfway over Taro. Taro stopped talking and laughed bashfully, quickly kissing Kenta’s pouting lips and allowing him to push him onto the bed.
"We’ll have to definitely save up for college too." Taro continued, his voice hitching and sighing whenever Kenta kissed or bit the right spot on his neck. Kenta stopped and rolled his eyes, sitting up and straddling Taro’s waist.
"You are making this very difficult. We have five years." Kenta grumbled, trying to get rid of Taro’s shirt.
"But this is serious, Kenta." Taro whined, lifting himself up and tossing his shirt aside.
"A serious issue that can wait." Kenta replied, punctuating with a soft nip on Taro’s ear, making him shiver.
"I guess it can..." Taro breathed, sliding his eyes closed as Kenta gently sucked at his neck and shoulders.
And just as Kenta slipped his fingers between Taro’s, pulling his arms by his head, a soft cry was heard from the bedroom down the hall, making Taro freeze and Kenta growl.
"Maybe she’ll stop..." Kenta whispered, putting more weight on Taro when he tried to get up. Taro whined, but stayed quiet as he listened as well.
Then there was silence for about four seconds and then the real crying began.
"Damn it!" Kenta growled, falling onto the bed, allowing Taro to stand up and hover over Kenta’s frustrated face.
"I’ll be back." Taro smiled, kissing Kenta’s nose before dashing away to the babies, calling their names in a singsong voice.
Kenta laid on the bed with his eyes screwed shut, listening to Taro singing a song from Minna de Utao, and groaning to himself.
Several minutes later, Taro returned to the darkened bedroom only to find Kenta sprawled on his back and fast asleep.
"Eh... so quick..." Taro mumbled to himself as he softly crawled onto the bed and attached himself to Kenta’s warm body. Pulling the fluffy comforter over both of them, Taro found Kenta’s hand and laced their fingers tightly together before pecking Kenta’s cheek and snuggling in for a night’s sleep.
