Yamada Taro’s Cheapest Curry Bread: Part 1
"You shouldn’t smoke. It’s bad for you."
Kenta looked up from his lap to see himself suddenly surrounded by three kids. Sighing and rolling his eyes, Kenta lit up the cigarette and took a long drag right in front of the kids’ faces.
"Does it look like I care?" he grumbled, leaning back into the bench outside of the grocery store as he waited for his sister to finish shopping.
"Your tongue turns hairy and black!"
"And your teeth get all yellow and gross!"
Kenta stared at the kids through his glare and groaned.
"Do you know why I smoke?" he asked the three kids, earning shakes of their heads in return.
"It’s because of things like you." Kenta replied sharply, turning away from the hurt expressions. Then suddenly, one of the kids grabbed the cigarette from Kenta’s mouth and dropped it on the sidewalk, all three of the kids squishing it into the ground.
"And it makes you extremely rude!" one of the kids said, smiling brightly up at Kenta as he jumped up in anger.
"You...!" Kenta started to exclaim, but he was cut off by the calls of even more kids coming his way.
"Yoshiko! Saburo! Itsuko!" the kid called, pulling two younger kids by the hands. Behind them was a high school student, juggling bags by himself as he ran over the list in his hand.
Kenta watched speechlessly as he was surrounded by kids... six kids to be exact.
"I’m sorry! Were they causing you trouble?" the eldest kid asked, smiling brightly up at Kenta’s scowl.
"No..." Kenta grumbled, paying no attention to the flock around him and eyeing the nearing high school boy instead. But just as the student was in arm’s reach, Sakura came hopping out of the store but stopped short when she found her disgruntled brother surrounded by children once again.
"Ah! Look at all of you! I hope Kenta-kun wasn’t bothering you?" she asked happily. The children shook their heads and gave the woman six bright smiles that made Kenta want to throw up.
"They’re not sweet at all! They took my cigarette away!" Kenta huffed, earning a smack upside his head from his sister.
"You shouldn’t be smoking anyway!" Sakura scolded, making the children snicker at the grown man.
Kenta quickly turned away and found himself face to face with the same high school boy he was just ogling.
"Oh! I’m sorry! I wasn’t paying attention!" the boy said in a panic, Kenta catching the plastic bags as they fell out of the boy’s hands.
"An-chan! Be careful!" the children all exclaimed, swarming around the startled Kenta and taking bags from his arms.
"An-chan? You’re their brother? You’re the one who helped me with the sale inside! I never would have known that trick if you hadn’t shown me!" Sakura said happily, helping the kids with the bags and handing them to Kenta again.
"That’s right! Ah, these are my brothers and sisters... I’m Yamada Taro." Taro introduced himself with a bow and with the same bright smile that his siblings wore. Sakura blinked in amazement at the smile and then flushed deeply.
"Yano Sakura! And this is Kenta." she said, pulling Kenta’s jacket collar roughly, making him bow. When Kenta stood up again, Taro was right there in his face again, taking the remaining grocery bags with a smile.
Kenta froze in his place, wondering what the hell had just happened to him when that kid smiled at him. He watched as Taro and Sakura talked animatedly with the noisy children about something... but all Kenta could focus on was that student... that Taro kid.
Another smack upside his head woke him from his trance, finding Sakura pulling him down the street by his elbow, following the Yamada family.
"If you don’t marry him, I will! Now hurry up! We’re having dinner at the Yamada’s home!" Sakura hissed at her confused brother.
"Hah!?"
And that was nearly two years ago.
Since then, Kenta had grudgingly grown a soft spot for the Yamada children, and an even softer spot for Taro.
Dating each other had been Kenta’s idea, and even though Taro wasn’t entirely aware of what dating was, he agreed. Sakura, of course, was naturally jealous, but spent most of her time with Mrs. Yamada as her motherly urges kicked in.
The Yamada children were ecstatic when Taro often dragged Kenta over, even though they seemed to think Kenta was their new brother.
Deep, deep, deep down inside, Kenta loved this. He loved the Yamada family, he loved how the kids would want to play games with him and would ask them to teach them the newest songs from Minna de Utao, since they had no television to watch it on.
He loved the attention he got from Mrs. Yamada, like what he had been missing for many years in his own family. Even his father, who was forced to accept the relationship by Sakura, had grown to love the family as his own.
But something was troubling Kenta as he watched the happy family chatter and laugh around the too small table under the dim lamp. He glanced over at Taro, who was helping his youngest sister after she had spilt some of her drink.
Not once had Taro truly expressed his feelings for the relationship. It had been two years since they had met, and it was going to be their second year together soon.
Since Taro was still in high school at the time and the age difference was quite big, Kenta was patient with him. Innocent kisses here and there, once or twice Kenta had tried to use his tongue and ended up being slapped by a startled Taro, who thought a bug was trying to craw into his mouth.
Kenta had tried to talk with Taro about it, about moving the relationship further, but each time the younger would make excuses or he would suddenly remember he had to be at a part-time job.
Another thing that bothered Kenta was a fellow student of Taro.
Mimura Takuya.
He was a rich boy and Kenta didn’t like him much. He seemed to be a little too fond of Taro and his family.
Kenta’s Taro and Kenta’s family.
The first time they had met was at Taro’s mother’s birthday party. Kenta had gone early to help set up the decorations, while Sakura, Itsuko and Jiro went to find a cake. Taro, being too busy with the younger children to answer the door, asked Kenta to answer it.
As Kenta opened the wooden door, he was slightly taken aback when a very pretty and very well dressed man stood there. Mimura narrowed his eyes at Kenta, and Kenta glared at Mimura, both of them looking each other up and down.
"Who are you?"
"Who the hell are you?"
Luckily, Taro came to greet Mimura before Kenta could slam the door shut in the boy’s face.
That meeting had sparked Kenta’s anger and jealously after overhearing a private conversation between Mimura and Taro. Apparently, Mimura claimed that Kenta was just trying to get into Taro’s pants, which Taro bashfully denied.
Kenta didn’t talk to Taro for the next couple of weeks.
And it wasn’t until the Yamada children came to the set of Minna de Utao, that Kenta realized how much he was missed.
Taro hadn’t spoken to anyone since Kenta had left.
Today, Kenta was definitely going to do it. He was going to sit down with Taro and force him to talk about what he wanted.
So, Kenta stood outside the gates of the university, watching the students walk past him and sometimes point in his direction like they knew him from somewhere.
"Oh! Kenta-kun!" Kenta turned around at the familiar voice, watching Taro trot over to him with a smile. Kenta looked behind Taro and spotted a very grumpy Mimura and an equally jealous girl. Seeing this, when Taro came into reach, Kenta extended his arm and loudly smacked his hand onto Taro’s backside, making sure to grab as much as his hand could.
While Taro gave a very startled yelp, Kenta pulled him away from the entrance and quickly guided him over to someplace a little more private.
"What are you doing!?" Taro whispered, looking around him in embarrassment. Kenta finally let him go, putting one hand next to Taro’s head as he leaned against the gates’ pillar.
"Today, we’re going to talk."
"T- talk? Why? About what?"
"Everything."
Taro blinked up at Kenta’s stern eyes, tilting his head to the side in thought. Kenta tsked loudly and dropped his arm to his side.
Seeing the stressful frown on Kenta’s face, Taro smiled softly and reached for Kenta’s hand in his pocket.
"Kenta-kun?" Taro asked quietly, trying to make eye contact with his stubborn and frustrated boyfriend.
"Hm?" Kenta finally grunted, scowling up at the sky. Taro tugged on his hand until Kenta looked at him, pouting slightly. He could never stay mad at such a face.
"I’m kind of busy now... tonight I’ll be home. We can talk then, okay?" Taro said happily, pecking Kenta on the cheek and dashing off before Kenta could agree.
