here's my non-kid DIY craft board on pinterest.

for example, here's the fabric pinecones I made as ornaments. pretty simple but time consuming.

I go out and scavenge nature for pine cones, greenery- pine, cedar, branches -look for dogwood and anything with texture or form- maybe some grasses- then combine them in a tall glass vase- I have three rectangular vases that I use for this. YOu can also make a rope of greenery - hang it on a wall or stairway- attach ornaments and ribbons. This is good time to find decorations in the charity shops- or materials to make your own.

This. cedar and some pinecones and even some lichens can look amazing.

or spray paint branches white and hang ornaments on them!!

I plan to use these directions to make gingerbread men ornaments. You could also make the extravagant birds, but that is just too much for me.

Himmeli!
i just discovered those on this awesome blog and plan to make one for myself this year:
Time of the Aquarius
they are a tradtitional finnish/swedish christmas decoration made of straw and i even found an instruction video on YT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0ivGVvSaJ8 it's in finnish, but nevertheless it's quite clear how to make them.
the great thing about them is that you can make them as complicated or easy as you like.
