I have done a lot of research on doing this yourself and the best advice is to have a professional do it. You can have it completely redone for anywhere from $400-$900 depending on size, or, there are guys who will spray a coating on it for $300.00. I sell salvaged claw foot tubs and we have the professional pick them up.
I'm getting a professional, just trying to find out what the best process is- read about some new coatings out there that are better...one called Zirlon.
Ok, here is a page that explains the difference. Here is a page that discusses professional reglazing some more and helps you find professionals that reglaze bathtubs in the US.
When we moved into our house in 2005, we had our tub professionally reglazed. It cost somewhere in the $150-$300 range. Our claw foot tub had some do-it-your-self type crap on it that the person who fixed our tub had to take off first. Before he came in, there was some cracking around the drain. The person glazing our tubs said that the tub was heavily damaged and looked like it had been left out in the rain. Once it was done, it looked a lot better. Six years later, there are a couple of small chips in the tub probably from when I dropped the plastic baby bathtub in there or something, but it still looks much much better than when we purchased the house.
I definitely think that was one of the smarter investments that we made in our house.
My husband refinishes bathtubs, tile, etc. etc. professionally. He uses an acrylic polyurethane material...what is it exactly you were wondering? Are you planning on hiring someone or using one of those kits?
I'm going to hire someone- but looking for info on what the best coatings are -read about something called Zirlon. Would you ask your husband for me? thanks
He's never heard of Zirlon...all the materials they use come from NAPCO (N. American Polymer Co., www.napcoltd.com) and it looks like this Zirlon stuff is manufactured by a company that makes all-purpose finishes for different industries, and is often used for sealing boats - but you might have discovered that yourself by Googling. One of the claims of Zirlon is that it is very long lasting so all I could say about that is my husband's company and the one he worked for in MI both offered 5 year warranties and I think that's pretty standard, so just avoid a company that doesn't offer that. A refinished tub done right will look amazing and brand new and you'll be thrilled. Good luck!
