Maybe a blind guessing game? Blindfold the kids and let them stick their hands in disgusting textured items to guess what they are?
It's probably a little too young for 4th graders but 2 liters with glow sticks in them for night time bowling is fun (make the 2 liters glow in the dark ghosts)
Maybe mad scientist experiments? I'm sure a 4th grader would find messing with Mentos and carbonation a riot though no clue if that's a bad idea.
Pinatas are always a win, especially if it is an egg or somethign and bursts open with spiders, gummy worms and other scary things. If you packed the prizes around somethign like foam rubber, that would make them burst out rather than just falling, maybe. The win with pinatas is that it combines violence with candy!
Might be a bit hard given the number of kids. sabrinaphynnSeptember 29 2011, 18:50:28 UTC
But a spiderweb room? You criss-cross lines of yarn/fishing line all through out a room... At the end of each line is the goodie bag. The kids have to twist and turn and work to get it! One fuzzy fake spider would be fun too. Only works if you have a room that you do not need for the rest of the party, because of the set up.

That's a really good idea, but I'm not sure it would be doable since our place isn't huge. But it's a good idea and maybe I can work on some variation of it that would work for us! I love the idea of making them work for their candy haha.
I think most of the party is going to be outside if the weather is nice- more room, and saves my house! There's no really good trees to hang them from, but maybe we can make a makeshift rod to hang from or something.
My mother did this for a party one year-she used garden stakes, stretched the line between them and then hung the donuts. We got on our knees and tried to eat the donuts as fast as we could.
Fair warning- donuts are hard to tie strings on if they're really soft and fresh. If I were going to do it, I'd either use something like a Dunkin Donuts French cruller or let them get slightly stale (not gross icky stale but a little firmer stale) before I did it.

We were just going to do a boring ghost or bat pinata, but this is a must better idea, thank you.
