Strine word of the day

Jul 06, 2005 14:05

Last night I watched a TV report on the threat of Strine becoming extinct. Apparently, Aussie kids today don’t know the words to Waltzing Matilda, but they can all recite at least one American rap song. This made me sad. I have noticed a decline in true blue, dinki-di, ridgy didge native Aussie lingo-also known as Strine-since I returned from my nine-year long European stint, and now it has been confirmed.

So, since I believe in keeping this language alive, I shall do my bit and start up a new word-of-the-day series exclusively for celebrating the uniquely Australian vocabulary. This series will run parallel with the game that you already know, and points will be scored separately for each of the two games. I hope you will take pleasure in the first Strine word of the day:

bonza

Is it…

a) a straight banana?
b) great or OK?
c) a measure of beer served in the outback?
d) a motor-powered canoe?
