Mina gasped, standing from the bed and saw Ville blinking up at her, his eyes still full of sleep. Oh shit, oh shit. Did he hear me? Oh, shit.

What did she say? Did she say what I think she just said? Does she remember? He couldn’t bring himself to ask any of those questions. Instead he invited her to join him on the bed. “What are you doing, baby?” He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and held a shaking hand out to her. “Come to bed.” His wife shook her head biting her bottom lip and backed away from him. “Come here darling.” She shook her head again, but made no further move away from him. He sat up and saw quiet tears sparkling in her eyes. “You woke up?” She nodded.

“That owl, he’s forever waking me up,” she whispered. And frowned. Has he always woken me up? I suppose so. I’m thinking the look on Ville’s face means yes. Ville had a slightly shocked look on his face, the one he always had when she would remember something little. Something at all really.

“He always did, for a little bit at least. You got used to him.” She nodded and raised an eyebrow at his grin when he smiled. “You tired to get me to let you shoot him once. Right after you moved in.” She gasped, absolutely horrified at the idea of shooting the bird.

“I didn’t.” He laughed quietly as she took his hand and pulled her onto the bed next to him.

“You did so,” he told her as he tweaked her nose, making her wrinkle it in annoyance. The way Angelica did so much when she didn’t get her way. She gave up and laughed, resting her head on his shoulder then sighed as he wrapped his arms around her.

“I read about my parents. Some of it anyway. From after they died.” He started rubbing her shoulder as she closed her eyes.

“Are you alright?” What a stupid question, Valo. Of course she’s not alright.

Am I? She shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, it’s hard. I feel like I should be upset, but I don’t know if I am or not. Like, I don’t know. It hurts, but I think it hurts more because I don’t remember them than it does because they died.” Ville nodded slowly, hugging her tightly when she started to cry. “I feel so empty. I don’t know who they are. I don’t know who you are. Not really I mean. And Angel...God I’ve missed so much of her life. I feel like I should know all these things and I don’t. I don’t even know who I am.”

“You’re...” Ville frowned when his wife shook her head and cut him off.

“I’m not. I know what you keep telling me. All these stories about how we met and who I was before, but I’m not her. I’m not your Mina. I read those journals, about this darling little girl with parents who moved her around whenever they felt like it. Never gave her a chance to have a real, steady, childhood. And...and...all I can do is grieve for this girl because her parents didn’t care enough to let her alone and let her be happy in one place. Or maybe they cared too much and tried too hard for her to have the life they wanted for her. All she wanted was a steady home and they didn’t or couldn’t give it to her. Samuel was the only steady thing in her life for so long.”

“In your life,” Ville whispered. “She’s not some character in a book, Mina. She’s you.” Mina shook her head again, pulling away from Ville and wrapping her arms around herself.

“It’s not my life. It’s her life. I don’t know what to do Ville. I don’t know who I am, I don’t know who this girl is. Who any of those people in those journals are.”

Ville reached out for his wife, watching in shock as she pulled away from him and scooted down toward the foot of the bed. Her fingers digging into her sides as she held herself tighter. He knew if he let her injure herself that she would find the release that came with it and continue with it. “No, none of that,” he snapped and pulled her against him, prying her hands away from her sides. “Shh. Hush now, my love.” He murmured to her as she spoke the same sentence over and over. Like a mantra as she cried.

“I don’t know who I am.”

He held her face in his hands, his fingers tangled in her hair. “Hush now. You are Mina Rochelle Valo. You’re amazing and beautiful and strong. You had parents that adored you, you had your Samuel. You grew up in different states, different homes your whole life until you were nineteen and moved back to Minnesota.” His own tears fell as he stared into her eyes. Please let me be doing the right thing. You went to college and became a lawyer even though you hated it. You came to Finland to escape from memories of your asshole ex-boyfriend and we met. We fell in love and got married two years later. You got pregnant with Angelica and told me that we’d have three babies. The first two would be girls and then we’d have our little boy. You are my wife. My love. My everything.”

She shook her head, closing her eyes and tried to pull away from him. I’m not her. I can’t be. I can’t be his Mina. She’s not real. She can’t be real. No one’s that perfect. “I’m not her, Ville. I can’t be her.” He nodded wiping her tears away with his thumbs then leaned in slowly and pressed his lips to hers.

“You are my Mina. No matter what happens, you will always be my Mina.” He kissed her again, gliding his tongue over her bottom lip until she relaxed into his touch. She sighed leaning in against him and parted her lips, a near silent gasp as he stroked her tongue with his own. He pulled away as slowly as he had kissed her and smiled softly at the dazed look in her eyes. “Lay down with me, love.” She nodded slowly, letting him pull her down onto the bed and rested her head on his shoulder as he covered her with the blanket.

“Do you ever..”she sighed and took a steadying breath. Almost afraid to hear his answer to her question. “Do you ever think that maybe I won’t get my memories back?” she whispered, as he twisted a lock of her hair with his fingers. “What if I don’t?” He kissed her forehead.

“We’ve all wondered that Mina. From the moment we found out that you didn’t know who you are. It will be heartbreaking if you don’t. But there’s always something we can do.” She lifted her head, blinking down at him as his lips formed a slight smile.

“What’s that?” He lifted his head, kissing her quickly then fell back onto the bed, drawing her down with him.

“Make new ones.”

It was only later, after Mina had fallen asleep snuggled against her husband that an idea started to form in his head. He spent most of the night tweaking his new plans and decided that if nothing changed in the next month he would put his plan into action. He only had to ask his parents, brother, and Mige to help set it up. But for now he would have to wait and see.

He settled in, wrapping himself further around his wife and probably since the first time she had come home, fell asleep with a smile on his face.
