Chapter 2: From letter conversations to confessions

“Hyunnie...”

“De unnie?”

“Do you still remember that boy from years ago?”

“Oh, why’d you ask?”

“Well, just wondering. If I was you, I would have forgotten about him.”

“Well, good thing I still remember him.”

“Ohhhh... That’s uri maknae!”

“Did you find him though?”

She just smiled at her unnies while the other eight squealed. They had understood the youngest’s smile as a ‘yes.’

Yonghwa remembered Seohyun’s talk with her unnies. He didn’t try to think more of what her smile meant but he was happy that she still remembered him. It made him more confident to talk to her, to try getting close.

He and his CNBlue brothers were backstage, putting their instruments away and cleaning up. The school’s anniversary concert was about to end, after the director finishes his closing speech. He was planning on talking to Seohyun after the concert, now that he had gained the confidence to do so.

What should I say? Would she be scared when I just approach her out of nowhere? Should I tell her that I was the boy she helped four years ago? Or should I tell it when we get much closer?

These thoughts invaded Yonghwa’s mind. He was nervous to talk to her, but he mustered up all the courage he had since this was the perfect chance to go up to her and talk. He wasn’t going to let this chance go for anything.

“...and have a wonderful night.” The director bowed in front of the whole student body and exited to the right.

“I guess we should go now.” The four boys stood up and made their way through the backstage and out into the quadrangle where the concert was held place. But as their foot stepped out into the open, crowds of girls and boys alike cornered them in a circle and crowded them. Most of them were squealing and complimenting how cool they were and that they love their music and that they also love them.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you...” Jungshin and Minhyuk kept on thanking and bowing to the crowd, hoping that they would let them out but to no avail.

Yonghwa was busy looking through the crowd for Seohyun while Jonghyun was so tired from today’s event that he had on a blank expression, but girls still squealed at him. He saw as their leader was glancing from left to right, as if looking for someone.

“Hey, who you looking for hyung?” He knew the answer to his question already. Good thing Yonghwa didn’t answer back or else these crowds of girls would have heard and spread a rumor already.

Yonghwa had been trying hard to look for Seohyun without pushing the girls in front of him but he had no choice but to do so.

“Excuse me. Oh sorry, excuse me. Can I go through? Sorry.” He excused himself time and time as he went through the crowd of fan girls and made his way out of the mob. As soon as his body breath in the personal space that it craved for minutes ago, Yonghwa looked around frantically for the girl he had loved for four years.

When he glanced in front of him, as soon as the people walking in front of him moved away from his view, as if coming from a movie scene, he magically saw her walking along with her unnies. He took a deep breath and started to walk towards her direction. But as soon as he started to move one of his feet, somebody had grabbed his arm and dragged him back inside the mob of fan girls. It was Jungshin who had pulled him.

Oh, he’s gonna get it later. Yonghwa thought with a stern expression plastered on his face.

“Yah! What the hell did you drag me?! Why is it that everytime that I try to go talk to her, you guys keep on dragging me away from her?!” The three had dragged him out of the crowd’s earshot and into one of the school’s empty buildings.

“Do you want to bring her into this?! Hyung, after this day, we’re famous around school now. And you being friendly with somebody as her in public would be a suicide for you, and her also. You know just how judgmental people are in this school, right?” Minhyuk had said out of concern.

He was right. Now that they just had they first performance, there was no doubt that they were going to be famous around school. Or maybe even in the neighborhood. He had never really planned ahead of what was to happen. If he knew this was to happen, him not being able to talk to Seohyun, then he shouldn’t have even gone through with all of this.

“Hyung, we all know that you like her. Heck, you obsess about her but still, not now. You can talk to her after today’s performance but not today. Ahrasso hyung?” Jonghyun patted Yonghwa’s back out of concern and pity.

He knew Yonghwa had been wanting to talk to Seohyun like a kid wanting to see his mother but they had told him earlier on before they even went through with the styling session with Jungshin’s sister about the disadvantages and sacrifices of going through with this.

“Okay hyung. We do want you to be our vocalist but here’s the thing. You’ll need to be sacrificing a few things if you’re still thinking of going through with this.”

“And what are some of them?” Yonghwa was still in dreamland, thinking of what he was going to do if ever he had had the chance to finally talk to Seohyun.

“Well, one of them will be that there will definitely be tons of fangirls fangirling over you after the performance.”

“That’s all?”

“Well, we gotta practice from time to time too.”

“And?”

“Well, you’ll be sacrificing a few personal things too. Like your time, and... A few personal-“ Jungshin paused. “-wants of yours. Are you okay with that? We’re all going to be in the same boat as you too after this.”

Yonghwa wanted nothing more than this God-given chance he was given. He had tried to hide his love for music, but with this, how could he even try hiding it from anyone ever again? He had been jumpy and enthusiastic about being a band since he had loved to play the guitar, sing and compose songs ever since who knows when. That, and he was going to be famous at school. He hates to admit it but he had been admiring the spotlight ever since he was a child. He was shunned by most of his classmates that he could only dream of being under the spotlight, and this was the chance to make that dream come true.

Good thing the three couldn’t read minds cause if they had, they wouldn’t have guessed that Yonghwa wanted to be in the spotlight, as they have witnessed just how obsessed he was with Seohyun. The latter was the reason they thought that he was going through with this. But the truth was, it was both.

Yonghwa had been wanting to make good use of his talent and be known for it. Talking to Seohyun was another reason that was of the same level. It was killing two birds with one stone: He gets to be famous and he gets to finally talk to the girl of his childhood. But if he was ever asked which of the two was helping him in making his decision, it was the latter. As much as he loved his talent, it all happened because of Seohyun.

Before the day that Yonghwa met Seohyun, he had never once touched his guitar or even looked at one. He knew he was talented at a young age but he never really had someone to motivate him to do so. But not that he’s saying that he doesn’t love music. He loves it, but he wasn’t sure if it was worth it. But the day he met her, he had began to hope. He began to hope about other stuff. That he could use his talent to become famous, to be able to become someone he never thought he could ever become, and to be able to find someone to truly love him for who he is. The last one though, he had already found. Only problem was to make her fall in love with him, and in that area, was he ever determined to do so.

“I’m sure.” Yonghwa never really got what the three meant by ‘wants’ but he was determined to do everything. He had never been so determined by anything else. And she was the reason he began to do so. That he began to change, for the better.

“You didn’t tell me I couldn’t talk to her?!” He was mad, not furious though, even though he so wanted to be. He had only been dreaming of this day, only to be stopped by people again. And this time, it was people who were close to him.

“Hyung! We did! This was what we were talking about when we said personal wants. We know you love her hyung, but we’re all in the same situation. But please hyung, just for today. You won’t be able to talk to her. Ahrasso?” Jungshin pleaded. He knew where Yonghwa was coming from, having a deep love for his childhood love and was only stopped yet again after four years of searching. Heck, who wouldn’t be pissed off?

“Ahrasso.” He said as he looked back outside to catch a last glimpse at Seohyun’s smiling face. She was laughing along with her unnies who were making their way out of the school to finally go home.

The next few days, Yonghwa would try and get close to Seohyun to only be crowded by tons of fan girls who he thought was multiplying ten folds day after day. He would try going to the library, only to be stopped by crowd of girls and kicked out by the librarian. He would try going to her desk during breaks but it was either his classmates would stop him, or Seohyun was out with her unnies or at the library.

He let it aside since it was the beginning but it seemed to escalate more everyday until two years passed and he hasn’t even talked even once to Seohyun. And was he really pissed off.

He had had enough of this. The three told him he could talk to Seohyun after the performance but they never told him it was going to be this hard. He couldn’t even come near 15 feet from her, more or less talk to her. And it continued on for two years. He couldn’t take it anymore.

He needed to think up of a plan to get to talk to her, he was going desperate. If this continues on, he doesn’t know what’ll happen. He might go berserk and he didn’t want that, but if he had to, then he had no choice.

----------------

“Aish!” Yonghwa shouted into the air at the school rooftop. He had constantly been chased by his fan girls, who seemed to be following and stalking him 24/7. He lay down on the ground and started to watch the fluffy clouds move across the blue crystal sky.

He took out his wallet where he had been hiding a picture of Seohyun’s inside. He had accumulated a lot of Seohyun’s pictures over the past few years. He couldn’t go near her that was why he contented himself with just pictures of her that he secretly took.

Yonghwa pulled out one where she was directly looking into the camera, flashing her warm smile that always made his heart melt. It was the same smile that she showed him when they first met six years ago.

She really wasn’t looking directly at the camera. She was instead looking somewhere near Yonghwa at that time and good thing he was in hiding, or else she would have noticed that somebody was taking a picture of her. He considered it his most prized possession, next to the bandage of course. He felt as if she was looking straight at him at that time that he even forgot to breath and take the picture. If he hadn’t snapped out of it then, then he wouldn’t be holding the picture in his hands right now.

He sat up when he heard a pair of voices entering the school’s rooftop. It was a boy and a girl. The girl’s voice sounded vaguely familiar. He looked from the side, since he was in hiding and gasped silently at what he saw. More like shocked and depressed.

It was Seohyun. Why was it that he nearly forgot Seohyun’s voice? Maybe because of all the times that fan girls were screaming out his name and of constant late night practices. Maybe because it had been a while ever since he had stood at least 8 feet from her. And who was with her?

His back was facing him but gritted his teeth when he heard her say his name.

“Jinwoon. Why’d you call me here?” Seohyun had a blank expression, as she didn’t had a clue as to why Jinwoon called her.

Jinwoon was the new kid around the block. He came in the middle of the school year and were classmates with him and Seohyun. He was also the same age as Seohyun, which meant was he was also as freakin’ smart as Seohyun is, since she skipped two grades cause of it. Both were advanced students, that was why they were both in the same class as Yonghwa.

The jealous boy already knew why he called Seohyun here, and he didn’t like it. Not only was he able to talk with Seohyun, he was also the same age as her. He was jealous, no doubt about it.

“Uhhhmmm... Seohyun. I know we’re friends and all but I just wanna tell you that-“ Yonghwa had to do something really quickly and he didn’t even notice that he threw a rock at the bars 20 feet away from them. It cut off Jinwoon’s confession, which Yonghwa thinks is a good thing.

“Hmmm? What was that?” Seohyun went over to the bars to inspect where the noise came from.

“Ah! Seo-“ The bell rang, indicating that the afternoon classes were about to begin.

“Oh! Break is over! Come on Jinwoon. We’re going to be late for class if we don’t get moving.” Seohyun quickly ran for the door and was soon followed by a depressed Jinwoon.

Yonghwa’s unplanned plan was successful. Good thing for his hand having a mind of its own. He had just intercepted with a confession that would lead to something he had always dreaded, somebody stealing Seohyun away from him. Yes, he knows that Seohyun wasn’t really his, but he was hers, ever since the day she helped him, she had always had his heart from then on. She had captured his heart from years ago and she doesn’t even know about it.

He put the picture back in his wallet and in his pocket. He now knows that he had to act fast. Somebody was going to be taking Seohyun away and he wouldn’t allow such a thing. He had to confess first before Jinwoon does.

But he knew that if he confessed, he would be dragging Seohyun and that wouldn’t be good. He knew some of his fangirls would bully her or something, if that ever happens. And that’s when he thought of it.

I’ll just write her a letter, saying it’s from a secret admirer. I’ll make her fall for me through letters and anonymous gifts.

Yonghwa, being the cheesy lover that he is, began to write a letter for the love of his life as soon as he got home from school. He kissed his mother on the cheek and bowed to his father as soon as he stepped inside the house and dashed up the stairs and into his room to lock himself inside.

“What’s wrong with him?” Yonghwa’s dad asked his wife.

She giggled. “You don’t need to worry about him. He’s all grown up. He can take care of himself.”

--------------------

Yonghwa had bought a stationery set on the way home and had quickly stuffed it inside his bag and ran home, as he was excited and embarrassed at the same time.

He let out a huge sigh as he leaned on his bedroom door after he had locked it. People in the neighborhood knew who he was, and if they were to see him buying a cutesy stationery set, it would cause a rumor to spread.

Ever since they debuted, Yonghwa had been careful about causing such things. He wouldn’t mind if it was just him, but he would be dragging along his members and the name CNBlue. He couldn’t do that. As much as he just wanted to be selfish, he wasn’t that heartless to drag them down when they had been helping Yonghwa with Seohyun.

They had sent in a few good words to their respective girls about Yonghwa. That was what they said, but knowing them for already two years, he knew that they had told Hyoyeon, Sunny and Yoona of his crush on Seohyun. Scratch that, that crush grew over the years and became love. Yonghwa knew it was love. He didn’t know how he found it out to be but they say that when you’re in love, you’ll know.

And he wasn’t going to let go of that love, ever.

He took out the sets of stationeries he had bought. Why so many? Because he knew he would need a lot since he knew that this fan girl craze would continue on for years. And he was really desperate of not letting her go. And seeing Jinwoon’s failed confession earlier on only strengthened his desperation to go through with this.

Yonghwa opened his desk lamp and sat down with the sets in tow. Why was it that he bought stationery when he could have just bought blank paper and white envelopes? He sighed but remembered why. He wanted to show how serious he was about the girl, and him writing it on a blank piece of paper doesn’t really shout romantic and seriously in love, right? So with this, he decided to do everything that he couldn’t do in reality.

First impressions are everything, he remembered how that was what he and his CNBlue brothers were thinking of two years and three weeks before their first debut performance. How time flies. A lot had changed over the two years. He had changed his appearance, he had made new friends, he had become popular, he had started to love his talent and gift even more, but what didn’t change was his love for Seohyun. He had still been admiring the girl, despite all the fruitless effort he’s done over the past two years.

But now, that was also going to change. He had waited too long to just stand from the sidelines and now, he was ready to get into the scene itself. He wasn’t going to back down, now that Jinwoon was in the picture, and was leading by two steps ahead.

After his nostalgic reminiscing, he grabbed one set, and a pen, and started writing down his thoughts and feelings into words.

Dear Seohyun,

I have always observed you from afar, but don’t be afraid. It sounds creepy and all, but I assure you, the thing I have for you is love. And I just want to let you know that I will always be watching you, guiding and protecting you in any other way I can’t. But don’t let me get in the way of your daily activities, just go about everything as if I didn’t say this. I just hope though, that at least, I could get to know you better, now that I have mustered up the courage of confessing all these bottled up feelings of mine to you.

From,

Your six-year secret admirer

Note: Don’t let the six-year throw you off. I am just truly shy, I guess ^^

---------------

Yonghwa was hiding by the corner of the lockers and was frantically hyperventilating from nervousness. He had stayed up all night, thinking of what to write and only slept for 2 hours, since he had to wake up by 6 in the morning to get ahead of Seohyun, as the girl comes to school at exactly 6:30 every morning. He had to wake up early so he could slip his first ever love letter to his one and only love.

He took a glimpse of the girl’s profile and saw that she was reading it. It had been 30 seconds ever since she opened her locker and saw the letter. He could see her eyes furrow in confusion and her pout emerge. His nervousness dissipated when he saw her flash that warm smile of hers and her eyes filled with the same warmth. He had heaved a huge sigh of relief.

He had finally done something, at least.

And another school day passed with Seohyun thinking of the letter, and the writer, and with Yonghwa admiring her from afar yet again, as he was now seating two seats away from the struck girl. He was happy that at least, he had moved up from three chairs away for the last two years, and was now two chairs away from her. Life was getting better, and he hoped that it still would.

“Hey, did you see Seohyun spacing out the whole day? That was so unlike her.” Yoona pointed out as the other five she was with continued on eating. Hyoyeon and Sunny looked at each other and nodded in agreement.

“What do you mean she’s been spacing out?” Jungshin, Minhyuk and Jonghyun didn’t know what their girls were saying. The three couples had been together for more than six months now. It was funny how they got together with their respective partners.

Minhyuk and Sunny were fighting almost everyday during class. They weren’t the best of friends, but their classmates saw something between them and were teased by them. But that didn’t stop them from bickering at each other. This continued on for more than a year ever since 6th grade and something happened that neither wanted to tell anybody else. The next day, they came to school holding hands. But then Sunny spilled it one night they got drunk and boy, was it the funniest story you’ve ever heard. And it was a story that wasn’t meant for little kids, so let’s just save it with that.

Jonghyun’s was different. He had been harboring feelings for Yoona ever since 5th grade, and the shy romantic that he was like Yonghwa, he had been telling her cheesy lines fromthen on up to last year. One day after school, he saw her with a guy, and the guy had his arms wrapped around Yoona. That pissed Jonghyun off. He rushed over to them and had almost punched the guy in the face when he heard her say, “Oppa, you’ll have to let me meet sister-in-law and my niece on the weekends. I miss them so much. You’ve been hiding them from me too long!”

Jungshin wasn’t the greatest dancer in the world. In fact, he was the worst. He knows how to walk, but that’s all he’s able to do. He doesn’t dance. PERIOD. But then, when he saw a blonde haired girl dancing in the wee hours at school, he fell in love with her. That was back in 8th grade. He then kept on watching her dance everyday, for the next few months until she confronted him one day and that’s how they got acquainted. The next few months, Jungshin tried to learn how to dance that he even went to dance classes after school at the dance studio four blocks away from his house. The CNBlue bros laughed at him everytime they would try asking him how dance class was. But those dance classes paid off, but not without him being embarrassed with competing against Hyoyeon in a dance competition. Even though he failed, at least he still got the girl.

And here the three were, sitting alongside the girl of their dreams. And the only one missing was Yonghwa.

“Well, I don’t know. But then, I saw her reading a letter when we all met up this morning. She’s been spacing out in class? Well, that’s weird.” Hyoyeon asked Yoona and she nodded.

“A letter? Maybe it was a love letter?” Jungshin asked. Oh no, Yonghwa hyung’s in trouble then, the tall boy thought. The two others looked at each other and thought the same thing. I guess now they shouldn’t just watch and see their hyung get his heart broken.

“I think it was. It was a letter from a six-year admirer of hers. God! I’m so jealous. Six years?! That is one determined guy!” Sunny squealed as she gave Minhyuk a you-didn’t-do-anything-up-to-par-with-that-to-me look, but Minhyuk didn’t sense her glare as he was busy making eye contact with the other guys to decided whether they should or should not.

“Six years?” Jonghyun asked the girls in which they all nodded at the same time.

Wasn’t hyung’s six years also? Then it snapped him. Was it Yonghwa who sent the letter? Hasn’t he been in love with Seohyun for six years already?

“Ah! That’s Yonghwa hyu-“ Minhyuk was cut off with Jungshin covering his mouth with one of his slender hands.

“Yonghwa? I know you guys told us that he had a crush on Seohyun but six years?! Aigoo, six years?! That’s too much!” Yoona pitied the love struck boy known as Yonghwa. He had everything; fame, looks, personality, brains, and maybe not riches but his family was said to be somewhat rich. He had all of those but the only thing he didn’t had was Seohyun.

“Why hasn’t he talked to her yet? I thought that they had after your debut performance two years ago? What happened?” Hyoyeon glared at the three boys and since it was Hyoyeon asking them, they had no choice.

“Well, we told him that he had to sacrifice talking to Seohyun if he wanted to change for her-” Jungshin wasn’t even finished when the three girls snapped.

“WHAT?! Aigoo, you guys are the worst dongsaengs. Why are you trying to get in their way anyways?”

“We aren’t! We aren’t trying to but we had to.”

“What do you mean you had to?!” Sunny’s eyes were widening in anger while Minhyuk retreated behind Jungshin’s back.

“Well, we just wanted him to try acting on his own. You know... Confessing to her.”

“MWO?! He’s already had a six year crush on her and you’re still going on with this? Aigoo...” Hyoyeon massaged her temples and turn to look at the other two girls.

“I guess now we’re going to have to butt in since our boyfriends are useless.” Sunny and Yoona nodded.

Yonghwa was astounded so early in the morning. There he was, holding another of his romantic and cheesy love letters in his left hand while his right hand was still holding on to Seohyun’s locker, which was now fully opened. He had known Seohyun’s locker combo since he had connections, now that he was famous at school. It was stalker-ish of him to do so, but he would do everything for his plan to be successful, even if it means breaking one of the things people treasure: Their locker. Well, he didn’t really break it. He just tried to get her locker combo from people he knew.

His eyes widen into an almost circle as he tried to absorb the scene in which he looked at.

To: My six-year secret admirer

It was a letter addressed to him, from her.

Was he dreaming?

Yonghwa looked left and right. He woke up extremely early today, excited for seeing Seohyun’s expression when she reads his second letter, but never did he expect this.

He took the letter as quickly as he can and exchanged it with his. He ran off to a secluded place outside by the trees and sat on one of the benches there. He stared at to who the letter was written to, trying to confirm if what he was seeing was true, and it was, so he carefully opened the letter, treating it as important at the bandage he got from her six years ago.

He took out the letter and before he even flipped it open, he breathed in first and braced himself for the contents.

Dear... Uh what should I call you?

Uhmmm, this is my first time receiving a love letter, so I don’t really know how to act or reply to one. So excuse me if I do or write something wrong here. Why is it that you have been admiring me from afar? Are you somebody I know? Somebody close to me? And if you don’t want to reveal yourself to me, I don’t mind at all. But are you okay with that? I know I wouldn’t be when I’ve been admiring a person I love from afar for six years. But maybe, you have your reasons, and I respect that.

About you wanting to know me better, I doubt that you’re one of my closest friends, so I guess you’re a classmate? Hahahaha, I’m sorry if I’m still trying to find out your identity. I’m a curious cat, as you can see ^^

At least now you know something about me. Hmmmm, how about we try communicating like this? By leaving letters in my locker? I would love to get to know you better also, same with you with me.

Seohyun

P.S. And I guess you put in your letter before 6:30, I presume? Don’t worry. I won’t be trying to figure out your identity ;)

Yonghwa was taken aback and intrigued by how she was so different from how he perceived her from afar. Well, he didn’t mind at all. If you truly love someone, you’re willing to love all of them, even their faults. And that’s what makes it worth loving them.

But then, he also remembered how feisty the girl was when they first met. He knew she wasn’t just a normal girl. She was something more. And with the tone and attitude of how she wrote her letter, he was getting more and more curious by the minute.

A smile erupted on his face as he gently put the letter in his bag and went on to go to the library to finish his homework from yesterday.
