Chapter 9: And the story begins - Part 2
“Aish!” Taeyeon shouted into the air as soon as she got to the next block away from the noraebang. She had just suddenly run out of the place without even thinking. Heck, when they started to get drunk from the soju, she couldn’t even walk straight. More or less think straight.
Tears threatened to fall from her eyes and it did. She was in the middle of some sidewalk, her bag and phone plopped down on the pavement, and her silent crying was the only thing you could see in the dark Seoul night. It was cold, and the weather didn’t help her situation. Her breath was turning foggy under the coldness of the night sky, and her wet cheeks were being illuminated by the moon’s serene light.
She started sniffling from all the tears and cries she had been doing for the past minute. She couldn’t help it. She doesn’t know what was happening, what she really felt, and what was the truth. Was she still in love with Leeteuk? Why did Hongki kiss her? Why did she run away immediately? Did she really promise herself to never fall in love again? She needed answers, but none were coming to mind as she weakly crouched down to pick up her stuff.
Her tears were in the way of her view. The world seemed to be all watery, and she believed it was. She had hoped that she could change the world’s colors like the tears did with her sight. What would have happened if she didn’t meet Leeteuk? Or Hongki? Or neither? Would she have still been the same old cheerful Taeyeon? Would she have met somebody else and maybe, would not be crying out of confusion?
It would be better if what if’s and would have’s were true, but they weren’t.
Taeyeon begrudgingly grabbed her phone and shoved it quite aggressively inside her bag. She slung the bag on her shoulders and wiped the tears from her face with the backs of her hands. She had had enough of crying. She had been crying, both physically and emotionally, for more than a year and what does she get from crying? More heartbreaks and confusions.
She had to stop.
She had to stop hoping.
Loving.
Crying.
Dreaming.
Or else, she would only get hurt in the end. And boy, was she ever tired of being the one who gets hurt all the time. She had had enough.
She walked on ahead with her head high, and as she turned at the corner, she bumped into somebody. And luckily, it was somebody with whom she had shared her moments with. Awkward run-ins, embarassing confessions, romantic dates, and heartbreaking words: Park JungSu.
"Leeteuk..." His name rolled off her mouth that it was barely audible as she stared at him, still sitting down on the pavement. She could see that he was shocked as much as she was.
Silence.
Two heads darted up simultaneously.
"Ah!"
Two pairs of eyes stared at the other for a millisecond.
"Oh, you go first." They stared at each other yet again, and started giggling and laughing at how they said the phrase at the same time.
Was it destiny, or was it coincidence?
"Uhmm... My name's Jung Yonghwa." He said as he bowed quite semi-formally to the girl in front of him at 12:05am.
"My name's Seo Joohyun." She did as the former did.
They both looked at the ground, until Yonghwa opted to say something.
"Uhhmm... Joohyun, right?"
"Uh, you can just call me Seohyun. I'm used to being called Seohyun."
"Ah de, Seohyun-ssi. What are you doing here at the middle of the night? It's not safe for girls like you to be walking around at a time like this." His eyes showed true concern and worry for the girl who was standing in front of him.
"Oh, I just came back from self-study session and I missed the bus." Seohyun turned her head to look at where the bus that she missed headed off to and turned around to look at Yonghwa. He titled his head to the side to see if he could still see even a glimpse of the rumored bus but he didn't. She may have been waiting here for almost 20 minutes now, he thought.
"That was the last bus, don't you know?"
"I know." She said with a sigh and worrisome eyes to compliment. Seohyun had always been home by around 10 or 11pm.
"I'll walk you home." He hadn't asked her if she wanted him to walk her home, as she had found out from her sisters that she was a very independent young girl that would always turn down a helping hand. Even if she couldn't handle the situation, she would almost always turn a blind eye from help.
Yonghwa walked three steps forward and turned back to look at Seohyun. He reached out his hand to her, in which she just stared at like she doesn't know what she had to do with it.
"Uhm, are you okay with it? I mean, I don't want to impose on you if it's a bother. I can just walk home by myself." She was, indeed, grateful for what he was doing. Seohyun was scared to walk back home all alone, but she had to since she had no choice. Yonghwa was right though. A girl walking around in the streets of Seoul late at night was a very dangerous thing.
Yonghwa looked at her eyes with utter concern and something else. Something, that Seohyun couldn't pinpoint. But she knew it was a warm feeling.
A very warm feeling.
She knew what he wanted to say. Even just by looking at his eyes. Without words needed, she already knew what he wanted to say.
I'll keep you safe, always.
A can of Pepsi Light flew five inches from the ground, unto a pile of garbage at the dump at the corner of the street known as the recycling area. A dose of its remains flew and made a trail of dark nasty brown on the pavement. It had landed on top of a pile of stinky leftover takeout from some restaurant, a few unidentifiable trash and a pair of torn and abused heart patterned boxers.
Hongki was frustrated, confused, depressed and all the negative emotions that you could think of. He grudgingly continued walking along after he had kicked the can hard, venting out his frustration on a carefully shaped cylindrical piece of aluminum.
He kept on mumbling inaudible phrases under his breath while he carefully pulled up his bag that was now slipping off his shoulders.
His mumbles and sighs were the only human noise you could hear. Honks and rubber tires of cars passing by and the clink and clanks of the cranes and machines that were working at a nearby highway were heard along with them.
As he walked past the fifth street he had passed through, he heard voices. Familiar voices.
And as he hid at the back of a nearby post lamp and peeked from it, his eyes widened and he could feel his blood boil more than it already did.
A pair of angry eyes. A loud voice echoed through the quiet streets. A pair turned around. Two pair of eyes widening. Fear creeping up their stomachs
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING HERE?!"
Two shadows were making their way across the streets of the beautifully lighted night Seoul. One was tall compared to average guys, and another was an inch or so smaller, with long hair.
Silence surrounded the pair.
But their minds had the opposite.
Okay, I gotta think up of a topic! Pali! Ughhhhh.... Pabo Yonghwa. Why did you have to go and act all cool?! AND IT'S ALL THEIR FAULT! I wasn't even ready yet!
He glanced over at the beauty walking beside him. He noticed that they were like a couple walking at night.
Seohyun latched onto Yonghwa's elbow. Good thing she was a logical person. He suggested that she hold onto his arm while they walk so that if a suspicious person comes along, she won't get snatched away or get hurt. Yonghwa knows he's somewhat above average in the brain department but didn't know he was this sly.
Maybe I could use this newfound skill of mine to make those guys do my chores for me, he childishly thought.
In the meantime, Seohyun wasn't worried about making her unnies do her part of the chores for her, but about the situation.
This is really awkward. I DON'T EVEN KNOW HIM THAT MUCH! And he was reaching out his hand for me earlier. Did he want to hold hands?! Ottoke! I don't know him yet! Seohyun fighting! Think up of a topic to get rid of this awkward situation, thought the ever so logical and serious Seohyun.
Just then, a grumble could be heard from between the two.
Yonghwa stopped himself from laughing but he couldn't. At least he tried.
"Pfffttt..."
"Shut up!" Seohyun unconsciously gripped harder on Yonghwa's arm while looking down at the pavement out of embarassment.
"Ahrasso ahrasso. You wanna eat? I'm hungry myself too. But my stomach has more self-control though." He smiled warmly and pulled Seohyun cautiously across the street to a few shops and restaurants with signs open and lit up.
She embarassingly nodded and Yonghwa couldn't help chuckle again at the dead of the night. She was just too cute to pass up teasing and all.
"Aigoo, Seohyun-ssi is so embarassing. Her stomach just grumbled!" He shouted, but not enough for everyone to hear. She slapped his arm out of feminine instinct.
"Cham!" Her nostrils flared out of anger. She let go of the childish man's arm and started stomping forward, not even caring of where she intends to go since she has only been here just once her whole life.
Yonghwa chuckled louder this time and speed walked beside the frustrated girl. He was now the one clutching onto her arm to prevent her from walking too fast and lose her.
"Ahrasso. Mianhaeyo Seohyun-ssi." Seohyun stopped dead at her tracks and swiftly turned around with an angry expression on her face. Was she seriously mad? Yonghwa thought.
"I'm human. I get hungry too." Her face calmed down and she began to look down at the ground. He immediately grabbed hold of her hand and dragged her towards their destination who someone he forgot suggested to him before. He had never really eaten here much but might as well take the time to explore.
Seohyun was taken aback from the guy's aggressiveness. Her hands started to sweat and the only thing she could do was stare at their hands that were perfectly molded to the other's, and a way to get out of this awkward situation.
Yonghwa felt clammy hands on his and forgot that he just grabbed Seohyun's hands. He looked back and slowly let go of her soft hand.
"I'm sorry." He scratched the back of his hand and bowed.
"Oh, kwenchanayo."
The once silent air came back yet again.
He pulled his head back up and they were staring yet again at the other.
Both started laughing. They thought that they both looked stupid, and witnesses and random civilians thought the same.
"Uh, let's go?" He meant to say that as a statement, not a question. But better to ask than assume.
The two shadows walked and laughed together while passing under a large sign at the entrance that said "신당동 떡볶이 타운 (Shindangdong Ddukbokki Town)"
